Politics has always played a role in the destruction of human groups. Some political groups just used religion to delude the masses into following their cause.
I think religion poses a great risk in the Middle East because there is no separation between mosque and state. You could justify many behaviors by saying it is compatible with Islam, including restrictions on free speech.
Aside from that, I think political disagreement (with nuclear weapons) poses the strongest risk to human survival.

Many have suggested that WW3 has already started...
But in any case, often times political and religious views will intertwine. Much of history will point to this conclusion, as does today's atmosphere of global conflict.
You see, the problem is that unless their survival demands them to go to war (ie: national sovereignty, for food or hunting land, natural resources, pop.density, climate change, etc...) seldom will a war breakout between opposing sides with a very similar religious or spiritual belief system.
The answers that religions try to provide are meant to appease the most basic and crucial of human curiosities: "why are we here and what is the meaning"
Therefore, if the warring parties pretty much already see eye-to-eye on these two "facts", then any arising conflict between them will most likely not be so great as to cause a full-scale military campaign.
Having said that, there are many examples of long and bloody wars between sides that shared many political and religious similarities. Much too often, war is an evil thing and not righteous or rational by any standard!

Neither, because Scripture indicates that the Earth will never be destroyed, by any means:
"...You have solidly fixed the earth, that it may keep standing." --Psalm 119:90b
"For this is what Jehovah has said, the Creator of the heavens, He the [true] God, the Former of the earth and the Maker of it, He the One who firmly established it, who did not create it simply for nothing, who formed it even to be inhabited: ..." --Isaiah 45:18
Only the 'world' of willfully disobedient mankind will be effaced from off the earth, while those who wish to follow God's principles will remain...

Interesting question. The political-military may play a part in it, but if anything does happen, it'll be the environment. My opinion, of course.
