I am a spiritual person. And I say prayers every night. I don't belong to a church and I wasn't raised in a religious way. But I do believe there is a God of some kind. I am not sure what this God looks like. I do not think God resembles man in any way. But I do believe in a power that has created the universe. But how do I know that God can help me with my problem? Do I simply keep asking God for His help and trust that He will help me? There are many people who have terrible things happen to them that I am sure asked for God's help. I just don't know what to think about this. Thank you very much.

UPDATE: I want to say THANK YOU for everyone who has answered my question so far. You've all given me great things to think about and I will re-read your answers several times. There's value in all you have said. I think this is beyond "choosing a 'best' answer." Again... thank you for those who have already replied... and to those who haven't yet shared their thoughts with me. Sincerely, Eric

Dear ericfrompa,

One of the things about asking for help- is making sure that you are asking the right source.

i think this is where your belief in God needs to be solid. Not just based on your personal opinion or a set of beliefs that someone pushes on you- but a faith that you've personally accepted and hold as your own.

i would say the way to know that God can help you with your problem- is to know God.

My suggestion may be to start to pray: ask God to show Himself to you.

Perhaps even go to a Christian bookstore and purchase a book on Basic Christianity (and determine for yourself whether the teachings of Christ are true). Or attend a church and have your questions answered from a Bible basis.

The truth is without knowing God, you don't know that God cares or can help you with your problem.

Feel free to email me with any questions or if i can help in anyway. Perhaps you can share your problem with me and i can pray for you - and see if God's word can provide any wisdom on the situation.

Hope that helps. Kindly,

Nickster

Why do you think you need to have a higher power help you?
What if there is no higher power other than nature itself?

Sometimes terrible things happen - sometimes they only appear terrible at first, but in the end they are not so terrible. Sometimes people can make the best of bad things that happen.

But, the most useful thing you can learn is to stop blaming some kind of higher power on your misfortunes and stop looking to some higher power to help you. You will be much better off if you can figure out how to help yourself.

First off, remember that you are a little piece of God incarnate in a physical body. Your job is to remember that fact and grow that tiny spark of God within you to a mighty, direct connection to divine source.
When you get out of your own way and open yourself to that higher guidance through prayer (when you talk to God) and meditation (when God talks to you), you will notice that the right people, situations and information are put into your path.
The trick is to let go of fear and allow this flow.

That is why when I ask for some help with something, somehow the right person will show up to teach me.

That is why I felt the urge to go into a store even though I was tired... a lady I had met years ago had prayed for assistance, and tagged me when I walked near her... and I gave her the pep-talk and some information she needed to get herself out of a protracted abusive relationship.

The help is there if you are open to receiving it.

The thing about God is that His thoughts are higher than ours and His ways are too. He sees a bigger picture and answers our prayers in a way that keeps with His character and purpose as well as our purpose and our benefit within His larger plan. If you can trust Him with your life, you can relax in whatever answer He gives you. Resting in His plan for you is the most secure you will ever feel.
Knowing God in a personal way and trusting Him doesn't mean that terrible things won't happen to you. Pick any Bible character and look at their life. Even the ones who followed God the closest still had some terrible things happen to them. But, God brought them through. And looking at their lives we can see the bigger picture and bigger purposes for their having gone through whatever they did. Every detail of our lives is important to God. He is more interested in bringing you closer to Him by whatever means, than you will ever know. It is the problems of life where He proves Himself to us. If our lives had no problems, we would never know His power to rescue us or give us strength to grow spiritually.
I would suggest that you read the Word and keep asking God to help you with whatever problem you have. I pray He will reveal Himself to you in a special way and you will know His answer to your need.

1)In thought (Not out loud) ask "The Spirit" who made all things that were made (John 1:1-5) for his name (it is unlikely you already know it). 2) Then if your need is a corporeal one ask out loud for the spirits (angels if you like) that love the name of (the name the Spirit revealed to you) for the corporeal thing you need or the corporeal solution you need. When you ask in the Spirits name (do not assume it is the name you might usually hear in church) you can depend on the universe to meet your need. But that does not mean you will just get what you want although often you will. You may require instruction from "The Spirit" to know what to ask for but if you continue to call He will answer.

God can help with any problem, but for His own reasons He may choose to say no. When you ask God for something He can say yes or no. Someone once asked, "Will things get better if I am baptized?" The answer was, "They may get worse." God in his infinite wisdom does not see things the same as you do always.

First of all don't lose faith in god. I think of it this way, many people go through ups and downs in their lives and the low points of your life is a situation God places you in to test how strong your faith is. It definitely takes time and patience. I too pray every night and talk to him about my struggles and over time i know he's slowly helping me stay strong and guiding me along the way. My faith gets stronger everytime i overcome an obstacle in my life. Just believe and pray to him.

It is with God like it is in any other relationship, that you have , it is a give and take. God wants you to give Him your heart and He promises, that He will take care of you.
When you get married and enter into that relationship, you promise , for better or for worse. And that is the way it is with God, we love Him and because we trust Him ,knowing that He knows us better , than we know ourselves, we trust Him , that He makes better decisions for us than we ever could make for ourselves. God never promised any one of us that the road to heaven would be easy, but He did promise that "all things work out for the good to those, who love the Lord and are called according to His purpose and who walk not after the flesh , but after the Spirit."
You have to make up your mind whether you believe , that God is, who He is, or not, there is no lukewarm in between.
Once you start taking God serious and honor Him, He will take your prayers serious and answer them.
How do I know ?.......because He is my all and all, and I have a wonderful relationship with Him, that I wouldn't give up for any price.

If you'll notice, your prayers aren't doing anything. I really recommend reading The God Delusion by Dawkins. You seem like an open-minded individual, and I want you to realize the truth.
