Are you talking about putting cold compresses or ice packs on your head during a migraine? Migraine pain is caused by your blood vessels dilating and getting really big, allowing lots of blood to pulse through the vessels, pressing on inflamed nerves in your head. Ouch! Cold sometimes causes the blood vessels in your head to constrict and get smaller, regulating the amount of blood flowing through the vessels, and helping them not to press against the nerves as much. I think in some cases, the cold also helps to numb the inflamed nerves to some degree.

I thought cold could trigger migraines. It is probably because of a variation of pressure in the veins and arteries in the head, and cold vs. heat being inhaled or cooling the blood, maybe?
Anyway, I find the best relief from migraines by using Goody's headache powders and going face down in a dark room for about a half hour.
