On this R & S I often defend other religions when it would be easier to just agree with the negative comments. Do any of you do this?( I think I do it out of a sense of fairness -- particularly when a religion I know something about is being thoughtlessly attacked.) Have you done this ? And if so, why---or why not?

I sympathize with you on this issue as I have done so myself. I believe that faith is personal and is a personal choice. Being Wiccan, I have taken hits from those of ignorance and/or lack of understanding; yet, I am not offended by them. Intolerance, ignorance, fear of something different can be successfully responded to with education and compassion. I rise above this poor behavior and set a good example for others. Good job to you, for doing so yourself!!

Blessings

Dear wbusykat4,

i don't know if i would call it defending a religion as opposed to defending people. On R and S, i have seen attitudes that are demenaing and unfair, particularly - lots of generalizations about groups of people that are unfair. People will say: Why are all Atheists mean (they're not i know some very kind atheists), or why are all Priests child molesters (there are some but not all- there are some good humble servants), or why are all Muslims terrorists (there have obviously been some noted but most are not)... And the truth is amongst all groups that are people who can give the group a bad name.

While i have a strong belief in what i believe -- i have always respected people's rights to believe what they want to believe. It doesn't mean that i won't disagree with them (i mean isn't that what Yahoo Answers if for- for people to discuss an issue intelligently and with hopefully some degree of civility?)

As a Christian i have especially corrected Christians who have communicated what i believe to be a right message but in an incorrect way. The message of Christianity is that God loves the World and gave His life for it- and i have seen some people share that message unlovingly, disrespectfully, and in a way which i felt was dishonoring and not really representing the type of love that Jesus displayed.

Hope that helps. Kindly,

Nickster

I think most people will defend their own beliefs. I am LDS, so of course I will tend to defend a lot of Christianity. I don't defend the people who are rude, tell you your religion is dumb or make you feel inferior though, even if they are Christian. why do people even comment to do that? sometimes I like to be the one that offers up a different answer instread of all the negative ones.

I don't really 'defend' them, but rather attempt to show people that "their" opinion of a particular religion are not necessarily the truth. As the years pass by, I've noticed that people are becoming more and more opinionated and end-up confusing their opinions for 'facts'.

I always defend other religions! Except I don't think I have ever defended a Christian because most bashing on other religions on here is by Christians!

I was Mormon for many, many years. My whole family is Mormon. Nothing pisses me off more than when someone bashes the LDS Church for there believes but yet, holds on to there ridiculous trinity or virgin birth stories. All religions are equally ridiculous so I warn people to think about there silly little believes, just because there different doesn't mean they don't believe just as hard.

Not religions per se, but I find myself sticking up for atheists on a semi-regular basis. Especially when someone goes out of their way to be rude, ignorant, and judgemental.

I do not defend someone else's religion, it is enough just to defend my own.
