It is only a tradition of man. Jesus said he would make his disciples fishers of men and so this symbol has been passed of as a Christian symbol but its not. Much of paganism crept into the organized church in early Christian history. Its more than likely that the fish symbol represents DAGON the pagan fish god.
Look at the Popes mitre (hat) its a fish head with the mouth open. Early pagan priests of Dagon wore the same head dress.

Since all we share in the belief in no god but we are open to believe in anything else we choose to, how about no symbol.
(BTW, I think the atomic model with an 'A' in the middle is the symbol for atheism already)

how about the chimpanzee named Darwin from the cartoon The Wild Thornberrys? or the series of animals evolving from pre-hominid to homo sapiens standing erect?

A fruit fly, guppie, some amphibians. Generally ANY species that has been studied and proven to evolve.

I've seen a couple of them. One is the walking fish with "Darwin" printed in the middle. Another one is a T-Rex with the "Truth" fish in it's mouth.

Best one I saw was one of those Christian fish, it had grown legs and inside was the name "DARWIN".
