For those of you that say virgins should wear white only and color dresses are for non-virgins. Is this because of your religious beliefs? what is your religion?

Please no 'it's traditional for a bride to wear white' answers as that is ignorant of actual wedding history. Only religious reasons why. thanks.

Just wanted to say thanks for all your replies. I find it funny that the ones that are quick to make smart remarks about virgins wear white etc are no where to be seen. lol
They were the ones I wanted to answer in hopes of understanding why they are so ignorant and interested in someone's sex life.
I'm a virgin and I plan on wearing color! :)

I dont think the white has anything to do with being a virgin...my aunt was when she got married and she did this whole rose ceremony where you give white roses to the virgin mary and in return you get red roses like a premission to have sex kind of thing. I think white symbolizes a new beginning, not to mention how inappropraite to advertise your sexual status at a wedding. its nobodies business but your own.

I'm Catholic and my mother said I could pick any wedding dress I wanted - As long as it was white. My grandmother did the same thing to her. I didn't care either way (If I found an ivory dress I loved I would have made a stink) I think religion played a part in it but more that it has to do with tradition and purity. I don't think anyone pays attention to the color of the brides dress anymore. At least in if it symbolizes virgin or not. I just think now it is what is in style. We'll look back on this decade of weddings and know it immediately because all of the brides are in ivory.

NO, I do not agree. The whole "white dress is for virgins" is a MYTH. Something started who knows when. The whole white wedding gown tradition started in 1840 when Queen Victoria wore white. The following is from "The History of the White Wedding Dress": "Women saw this [wearing a white dress] as a statement of class and style and, so, it was copied. The white wedding dress in those days had nothing to do with being virtuous - it was all about wealth. Getting married in a white, extravagant gown was a sign that you could afford to buy a dress that you would never be able to wear again because of its style and color (whites were not easy to clean in those days as they are today!)." So, NO, I do not believe that a white gown is reserved for virgin brides. I bet many brides going way back to the 20's and 30's were not even virgins. And, today????

I am a Catholic, and agree with what bakey3434 said. The white dress doesn't represent purity and virginity. It is a traditional fashion statement. People have taken the color to mean that, but it doesn't. If anything, blue represents purity. Now, if you're looking for a symbol of a virgin bride, take the blusher veil that a bride wears over her face at the ceremony. That represents virginity in a religious sense, but most people don't know or care about that. I certainly don't.

A white wedding dress was not started out as a virginity or purity or religious thing...
In modern tradition, the color of western-culture wedding dresses is white. Used in this sense, 'white' or 'wedding white' includes creamy shades such as eggshell, ecru and ivory. One of the first women to wear white at her wedding was Mary Queen of Scots, when she married François II of France. However, the choice was seen as very inauspicious, as the colour white was the official colour of mourning in France during the time. The color became a popular choice in 1840 with the marriage of Queen Victoria to Albert of Saxe-Coburg. The Queen chose to wear a white gown for the event. The official wedding portrait photograph was widely published and many brides opted for a similar dress in honor of that choice. The tradition continues today in the form of a white wedding. Prior to the Victorian era a bride was married in any color except black (the color of mourning) or red (which was connected with prostitutes). The white dress came to symbolize happiness, purity of heart, and the innocence of childhood. Later attribution suggested that the color white symbolized virginity, however, this symbolism is slowly fading in favor of simply having a traditional and popular white wedding, regardless of the couple's circumstances. It was originally the color blue that was connected to purity.

I'm aethist. I was raised as a Catholic. I believe that in the Catholic religion white represents purity, hence virginity. Also as a Catholic it is your duty to save yourself for marriage. But the real reason people wear white wedding dresses today is really because of a fashion statement. Queen Victoria wore a white gown in 1840 when she married Albert of Saxe. Back then blue was the color that represented purity, white represented wealth. Her statement was weallth and for some reason it was mimicked. Before that women wore bright colors to show their joy and happiness for the occasion or dressed in colors that appropriately reflected their wealth. Now a days it's such a tradition for people to wear white that I myself will wear white on my wedding day and I am by no means a virgin. Everybody that I have ever talked to that didnt wear white on their wedding day has regretted it.

The white dress is just a tradition. Any bride can wear white, whether they are a virgin or not. I'm a Catholic.

I've always associated white with virgin. If you feel uncomfortable with white, consider off white. It looks wonderful, and you might feel perfect in it.
But honestly these days, and for a long, long time now... how many brides were really virgins, but wear white dresses?

You just can't say religious ppl. I have been to Muslim, African and Chinese weddings (greatly different) and there religious beliefs have been that color represents many different things like nature, family, God/god, unity, identification...etc, and in some animal garb was worn. White can mean purity but it also means starting over and wiping the slate clean for a new beginning.

I'm Christian and I believe that wearing white for virgins only is simply a tradition, not Biblical. It is not for others to know if you are a virgin or not and if you had to wear a non-white dress it would be degrading. You might find these lyrics interesting, it's Martina McBride's song "Wearing White".
