We have 2 of the most beautiful Pomeranians ever - they both have very loving, sweet dispositions about them. So recently my husband and I decided to adopt a third one. We wanted to give an unwanted pet a good, loving home. So we adpoted a another Pomeranian, Valentino. He is so sweet, loving and gets along with the other 2 just great. The problem, I love birds. so my husband has put bird feeders along with bird houses in our back yard making a beautiful bird sancuary - our new addition is a bird killer. He has killed 5 of my baby birds in the last month and I don't know how to break him of it - we have never had this problem with our other 2 so it really has us stumped - we have a really nice fenced in back yard w/a pet door so the dogs may come and go as they please - our neighbors have cats so the front yard is really out of the question and getting rid of him is not an option - any suggestions would be greatly appreciated...

They think its their job to protect the property from intruders... My dog does it as well. I suposed they will grown out of it. Put a bell on the dogs collar so the birds hear him coming. Don't really know how to help sorry.

1. I think you have to get rid of the bird
feeders for the time being, because now they are actually bird traps.
2. Don't blame the dog, it is an instict, he doesn't know it is wrong.
3. You may be able to teach him it is wrong, as with every other dog training. TAke him to a pro, do basic obedience training, and then say NO when he goes to kill a bird and praise him when the birds are there but he is calm. Sth. like it, a dog behaviourist will probably be more able to help.

Unfortunately, deep in their genes, dogs are predators. So you best bet is going to be to limit his access to the birds.
Can you fence off the birdhouses and feeders (I'm thinking of the fencing gardeners use to keep deer out of gardens)
And while it won't help the baby birds I would put a bell on his collar so the big ones at least can hear him coming.

i really don't know what to say i have never heard of a bird killing pom!! i know that my dog is a bird killer if she catches them but that is her nature!! she is a black lab mix!! um all i could say is go out with the dog and if you catch it with a bird or you see it go after one discipline it and tell it no and if you keep up with disciplining the dog it might just lose the habit!! no guarantees just a suggestion. i know it will be kinda hard having a pet door.

maybe you could put an x pen out there around the bird area, paint it green or whatever to match the surroundings, and the dogs can't get in under the feeders and the babies will be safer.

Okay, I have a question. How is a little Pomeranian reaching baby birds?

1. Spray dog/cat repellent near the ird area.

2. Use a static collar that gives the dog a litle shot of static if it goes out of the boundries(out of the bounf=dries includes the bird area).

is it obtainable to take the feeders out? or positioned them on the right of the fence the place your canines cant attain it? perhaps in a tree? (playstation , i for my area like pomeranians too, sooo lovable!) wish this helps, sturdy success!
