Help! I cant decide they're all so cute, but which one is right for us. Ive got an 1000 sq. ft. home. I also have a large fenced in back yard. I have a 1yo and a 2yo active little girls. I want a friend for them. I'd like a med to small dog. Not to small cause It would be to fragile to be around toddlers. Plus I take overnight trips out of state to the inlaws monthly. I want to be able to take the dog with us. I hate to have to burden with a large dog. We arent very active, basically just stay home with the kids play indoors. Outside weather permitting. Thanks for any input..

Good smaller breeds are beagles, bassett hounds, cocker spaniels, cairn terriers or pugs.
Let me also suggest a Lab, but especially a golden retriever. I grew up with a golden and they are by far one of the best breeds for families. They are easy to train and very gentle around kids. Kids your age are going to want to climb all over a dog. Our golden always let little kids climb all over her and pull on her hair. They are very laid back. She loved car rides too. Your house is large enough for one and with the backyard the dog can run around. The great thing about goldens is that they are retrievers. Excercising them can be as simple as tossing a ball! I hope you find a wonderful dog for your family!

I would suggest:
A Poodle. They come in all sizes and many colors (all solid, though). You do need to keep up with the grooming, though.
A Bulldog. Very family friendly and don't require a huge amount of grooming and exercise. Because of their unique body shape, they do sometimes have more medical issues.
A Whippet. Good family dog, though may require more exercise than you want to provide.
A Miniature Schnauzer. Generally great with kids. They also require a bit of grooming.
A Beagle. They're pretty easy going, though they can get noisy. Remember they were bred to follow rabbits and other game and to use their voice to let the hunter know where they were and what they smelled.
A Cocker Spaniel. Like all Sporting breeds, these require a bit of exercise but probably not as much as some of their larger cousins. As a very popular breed, you need to be careful where you get one from.
Bull Terrier. Maybe a little on the large size but they're very family friendly and easy maintenance coat.

Remember that the individual dog and where you get him from is probably more important than the actual breed. Unless you have a lot of spare time to train a puppy, you probably want to get an older dog who already has a good solid temperament.

An American Pit Bull Terrier. I know you have heard the media hype, a killer. Not true. Mine is the most people friendly dog and especially with kids,
When my daughter brings over my baby grandson and sits with him in her lap the Pit will go over and put her head in his hand and let him play with her ears and she licks his toes. If she puts him on the floor she will lay by him. I have seen her do this for an hour or more. She will not leave his side. There is a good reason they call them the "Nanny Dog".
Mine is not a big dog. She is 55 lbs.

I think you should go for a border collie or a kind charles. The border is classified as one on the most smartest breeds of dog, they are medium, easy to train, loyal and non-agressive. The kind charles is a patient dog that people take to hopitals because they are so gental.
