I'd say that most "jobs" do precisely that!

I quit the corporate world a few months back to work my website jewelry business that I've been building for several years while also working a contract freelance job a couple days a week... I do the website and catalogs for a new little manufacturing company.
When I quit the old "day job", I got busier than ever, and the money has been just fine. I'm working the same long hours, but they are MY HOURS and I am rewarded according to my output. I can cut out and go run errands when I want to. I can shuffle my schedule any way I want.
While I needed to see the "stability" of that contract job for me to be brave enough to strike out on my own, now that contract job is kind of getting in the way... though I do see it as a nice way of getting out of the house (and make it pay) a couple days a week.
My advice is to see what you do that is needed out in the community, and market it. For example, there are a lot of small businesses that need a bookkeeper to come in for a few hours one or two days a week. If you work that right, you can get 4 or 5 such contracts going and do just fine, and still have time for yourself. Consider the tax benefits.

At times, yes it does.

I wish to spend more time with my family....but I leave at 8:45 in the morning and come back at 8...this hardly leaves any time for me or my family.

That's why one day I hope to have enough money to start my own....and do what I like. At the moment I am living with it.
