Why not go for the most popular family dog in years past?
An American Pit Bull Terrier. I know you are saying OMG, a killer. You could not be further from the truth. They are the most people friendly dog there is. They especially love children. That is why they are called the "Nanny Dog".
Petey of Little rascals fame was a Pit Bull. So was Tieg from Buster Brown.
When my daughter brings over my baby grandson and puts him on the floor the Pit goes over and will lay down next to him. She will lay there for an hour or more. She will not leave his side.
She is not a big dog, 55 lbs.

MINIATURE SCHNAUZER!! they dont shed, they are hypo allergenic and they are the most adorable spunky fun loving dogs that arent psychotically hyper. They dont require a lot of space to run around in so they can even be suitable for an apartment. They are good with kids if they are socialized from a young age. Some can be "barky" according to a breed description though that hasnt been my experience with my schnauzer at all. If you train the dog that barking isnt ok from puppy hood then this shouldnt be a problem. I adore my schnauzer to pieces! wouldnt trade him for the world. in fact, hes sitting on my lap, paws on the keyboard right now! hes the best

TONS to choose from. Lhasa apso, Schnauzer, Bichon Frise, Giant Schnauzer, Cocker spaniel (they are overbred, really research the breeder if you get a Cocker. Great dogs if you get a good one, but expensive medical problems are common)... look for a dog with a haircoat (like human heads) instead of a fur coat-you'll either have to take it in for haircuts, or learn to do it yourself.

Oh, and poodle crosses shed just as bad as whatever they are crossed with. Labradoodles shed. Cockapoos don't.

Kerry Blue Terrier in general isn't a good dog for inexperienced traines/owners/handlers.
