Metronidazole has been listed by the International Agency for Research on Cancer as a potential human carcinogen. What you read is true- it has caused cancer in experimental animals but there are questions and issues on some of the testing methods on such experiments though.
Nevertheless, it appears to have a fairly low potential for cancer risk and under most circumstances the benefits of treatment outweighs the risk. If your mother was prescribed with it, that means she needs such treatment so do not worry. There are so many potential carcinogens (smoking, from different foodsources, from things we use in our daily life) around us but not many are being affected.

See this excerpt from a study on this drug: "Age-gender stratified analysis did not reveal any association between metronidazole use and cancer. These data support no association between short-term exposure to metronidazole and cancer in humans. Although the results are reassuring, they may not extend to subjects who have used metronidazole for prolonged periods; further epidemiological studies should focus on these individuals."
So, rest assured the risk is not very high.
I'm using it right now.

Yes antibiotics do kill the bacteria.. Who told you it doesn't? Pepto Bismol is normally used in conjunction with 2 antibiotics, such as, clarithromycin and amoxicillin or metronidazole.

If you look at the MSDS (materials safety data sheet), in it's pure , concentrated form, it is listed as a *possible* carcinogen--which means it's probably nothing to worry about. Also, the fact that it is an ingredient in a number of FDA-approved drugs, suggests that its risks outweigh its benefits.

In large doses, maybe, like sacharin. There's probably not a big chance. You know they have to put warnings on everything or they'll get sued.
Don't stop using it w/o talking to your doctor.

The FDA is overly strict about what meds it allows to come on the market. You need not worry about cancer risks in any prescription med. If there was some sort of significant risk, it would have never been allowed on the market.
