There is no 'down time' for them, female cats can come into season any month of the year. Feral cats usually time it to the spring, but not always. Add in that indoor house cats get out when they're in season & you've got males on the lookout 12 months of the year.
They don't just stay home, they patrol their territories. They hunt. They do cat things.

There isn't a season cats mate they mate when the female becomes in heat, but female cats go in heat at different times. My cat always went outside, but now that we neutered him he stays inside and eats all day.

Male cats don't have a season. Female cats will "come in season" (meaning go into heat) repeatedly until they are bred. Sounds exhausting, doesn't it? What male cats do when they aren't attempting to populate the world with cats is to patrol their territory, nap in the sun, catch something to eat, terrorize nearby birds, annoy someone's dog, dig up your neighbor's petunias, rip up someone's trash, and scare little old ladies by sneaking up on them and rubbing on their legs. As a result of their territorial patrols, they also fight with other cats (mostly male) who may have strayed into their territory. They also go around marking their territory, so it's just too bad if something of yours is nearby. Kitty will think it smells just right.

The stay home more and page through your catalogs when you aren't home, but seriously, cats are not like deer and do not have a mating season. Pretty much they are like humans in that regard.

For a cat, mating season lasts from February until October, so when it's not mating season, he's seeking shelter from the snow.

Not necessarily. When a male cat is not neutered they roam, get into cat fights and usually don't fare well. A neutered cat will usually stay around the house, be a lot less aggressive and be much healthier

Like all cats, they know their prime value is in being an ornament in the lives of humans. So, they groom themselves constantly and conserve energy by sleeping 2/3 of the time. If you ever get a male cat, I strongly suggest you have him neutered. Then he can spend all his time on his prime directive of being a pampered companion for you.

My tom cat, J. Edgar, stays in most of the time. But I think he can smell when a female is in heat. He wants out then and will probably stay gone a day or two. When he comes back he seems satisfied with himself. He is a love hog anyway.
