I also work for a living...and yes when I say this I am really busy...but sometimes other people think when you are single you have so much more free time than your married friends.

well some single people are really busy because they don't have anyone in their life. if you don't want to talk to someone, just say so.

It depends.
Speaking generally, it is up to you to define your boundaries.
There is always someone who is really just a time-waster, so engaging them in even a polite way will cost you 30 minutes or more of your time.
If you are in the midst of something, such as meaningful work, and some lonesome time-waster calls, you have to tell them up front that you are busy and cannot stay on very long. Time them for 5 minutes and then say, "Look, I have to go, I'm sorry but I am very busy right now. We can talk some other time. Goodbye." Then you hang up.

When I tell someone I can't talk to them because I'm busy, it's because I really am busy.

If it's hard to tell the truth, tell a lie like saying you are busy. If they don't believe you, so what, that's their problem.

it means you are busy, they must not know you that well if they dont believe you.
