i wouldn't feed him LOTS of garlic, but maybe about half a clove or so per day. but crush it and put it in his food. you can get dehydrated garlic in his food with supplements also.(there are garlic-brewer's yeast-etc supplements at petstores. go check them out if you want)
if your dog is getting fleas repeatedly, its probably because theres fleas in your house or yard, or somewhere your dog goes very often(could be the park, could be during his walks..etc). you would probably have to kill all the fleas and the eggs inside your house, maybe a flea bomb or something, i dont knw. but you have to get rid of ALL of them (not only for your dog, but for you&family too.)
when you used the advantage, did you keep it on until it completey dried? or did you just wipe it off or wash it off? cause then the flea-poison doesn't get in through the skin of your dog and it won't work. its waterproof after the few hours/days it goes completely into the skin..
also, use a flea bath and bathe him regularly, at least until the fleas go away. medicated flea baths can be a bit irritating so maybe once every two weeks or so.and maybe a oatmeal dog shampoo every other week also (optional.)

I don't know if that will kill fleas or not, I'm not familiar with Dettol. But, I saw the other person say to feed your dog garlic, and garlic is toxic to dogs. Yes, small amounts probably wouldn't kill him, but it's smarter to avoid it altogether.
As for the Advantage not working: Are you sure you applied it right? You should part the hair to get it right on the skin. And I'm not sure about Advantage, but with Frontline I think it can take up to 24 hours to kill all of the fleas. Are you still seeing the fleas, or just him itching? Flea bites can continue itching even if the fleas are gone- like mosquito bites keep itching for us even though the mosquito is gone. And depending on how bad he had them, and how badly he was itching himself, he might need a steroid shot to control the itching, or an antibiotic if he scratched and chewed his way to a skin infection. I don't mean this to sound insulting, maybe you knew all these things already, but I know that sometimes people aren't told how to correctly apply flea prevention, and what to expect once they have applied it.
If you aren't seeing any live fleas, you might want to call the vet and see if they can get him some relief for the itching.

Getting rid of fleas is a monotonos problem. I adopted a pup, full of fleas, even after a flea bath.....This is what I did.
get a good brand flea dog shampoo, and 2 flea/tick collars. Bath the pup in the shampoo, wrap it up in a towel, don't let it shake until you are in the middle of your carpet. Keep it away from your couch/chair, any type of upholstery. put the collar on it. Put the other flea coller in your vacuum bag and be prepared to vacuum at least 3 times a day. take a very very fine toothed comb and comb out the fleas. The same kind of comb anyone would use for lice. Then after combing, vacuum immediately. Comb the pup, they will love it, a few times a day, always on a open part of the carpet, and vacuum again. the flea collar in the vacuum will assure they don't go everywhere. it may take a week or so, but it really does work. Mine was flea free in about 4 days. Be patient, it is worth it.

Some dogs are allergic to garlic so I wouldn't recommend feeding that. Are you sure you applied the advantage correctly? I use only Frontline Plus on my dogs, monthy. They have never had a flea ever . I would try frontline before you give up on these topicals. They are the only things that I have found that actually kill and prevent fleas. In my opinion, nothing else works.

I worked in a vets office when I was in college and a lot LOT of dogs are allergic to garlic and others the garlic made them sick gastrically. Follow Peg D's instructions to a tee and it will work. The vet assistant use to recommend the same thing to owners who couldn't afford to get them a flea bath. Even with a flea bath they are still in you home in the carpet so they would just reintroduce theirselves into him. Poor baby

Go to www.hyperdrug.co.uk. There is a very effective product called Hyperdrug Flea & Tick Drops. Very much cheaper than Frontline. You can buy on line.
I have used it on my dogs for a couple of years and it is excellent. They used to be covered in ticks as we live near a Plantation but I can honestly say I haven't seen a flea or tick on any of them since I started using this product.
I do them every six months as a preventative.
It says on the packet that it is safe to use on puppies from the age of two weeks old.

I can't believe advantage didn't work did you use it on the dog? I use revolution and yes while it is expensive it keeps fleas ticks and heartworm away from my dog and has for 9 years. You can buy the capsules one at a time from the vet. Please take care of your dog. don't be so cheap.

Try feeding him lots of garlic. Garlic will kill the fleas and make him less itchy. Try slipping it into a piece of bread and act as though you are giving him a treat, do this several times a day until he gets used to it then just put it in his bowl.

I don't think you should experiment on your dog. I think you should get Frontline spray (not the spot on). It gets to them right away, and it is not expensive.
