From an Army Officer:
Technically, no, we are not allowed to. We are not allowed to play poker with them either. (i.e. gambling, etc...)
Now, that being said, does it happen? Absolutely!
I have discovered that my Soldiers that I lead respect me more if I go with them when they go out. Now, I don't drink when we are together, but they do and we have a good time. It works out great, because they have a Designated Driver, and I can watch out for them and keep them from getting in trouble. Most Soldiers get into trouble because they don't have a DD, or get drunk and pick a fight with the wrong person, end up in jail, and guess who has to come sign for them??? Right, the officer.
Now, you have to spend time with them when they are in a pinch as well. If the Soldier sees that you support them and their family in the bad times as well as the good times, then they will follow you anywhere. It is a double deal. You can't spend only the good times with them and not the bad times, and get respect from them. That is when you fall into trouble and become "that officer".

In the Australian Army, officers and enlisted men usually drink together. I have more respect for an officer who hangs out and chats with his men than an officer who is convinced that having a drink with lower ranks is below him and then decides to retreat to the Officer's Mess with the rest of the military elite.
What sort of things would an officer do when drunk that'd make him or her lose the respect of the enlisted soldiers? An enlisted man is just as capable of doing the same thing. Enlisted men rely on their fellow enlisted men just as much as they do on officers.

I have seen this occur on many occasions. General the officer ends up At spot popular with his men, he buys a round or two and goes on his way. No problem here, in fact it's good to add a personal element. However I have seen a full Commander, USN drink with his lower enlisted guys and then approach the MAA's to bail them out later, this was not so cool in my opinion.

I would tend to say that it is not allowed. Can't speak for the Army, but in the Navy, we generally didn't do that sort of thing, well not while in the US anyway. While overseas, would occasionally run into officers, while out on liberty, and if we happened to be in the same place at the same time we might all have drink together, on their dime.

It's a really bad idea. Whether or not the anti fraternization rules are enforced is beside the point, it's just stupid for any officer to do this. Anyone that doesn't instinctively know why simply isn't officer material.

It depends, if it may be seen as fraternization than no, they are not allowed to.
Yes, I think it is a bad idea. I could see an exception if you went for *a* beer with your platoon sergeant (if you are a platoon leader) and such but not with "the men (the enlisted below NCOs)".

It's generally not a good idea, it's called fraternization, and it is against the rules. Personally, I think it's also a bad idea because the military has rank for a reason. Officers and enlisted don't always see eye to eye anyway.

It is not prohibited, but it could cross the line into 'fraternazation'.
In this day and age, the 'all-graders club' is a very common thing, so you will end up with mixed drinking.

Are you sure you served in the Army and not the boy scouts? If you in fact DID serve, then why would you need to ask this question on a public, mostly civilian, group?
