So the recruiter is lying to me when he says I can sign up for three years? Its not that I don't want to to go to war or anything I just want to no what I am getting into.

The rest of the time is Inactive Ready Reserve (what I am in right now). It means you really don't do much but take a physical once a year and mail back paperwork, but can technically still be called.

Its an 8 year commitment for any military service, you would be on 3 years active guard status and then 5 years as an individual ready reserve IRR. You are liable to call up by a signature of the secretary of the Army. Which isn't hard to get these days. Get everything from the recruiter in writing.

There isn't a 3 yr contract with the Guard. There are initial 4&6 yr contracts with 2&4 IRR commitments. That's it.

Don't want to do more than 3 years? Don't sign on the line.

Don't let anyone bother you, you sign up for 3 years that what you'll get. You will do 3 years active and that is what your contract will have you do, but after that you'll be callable in case of extreme emergency that requires a response like a hurricane, flood, etc. but really its a pysical and paperwork for a few years after your 3 years just in case. So no your recruiter is not lying to you but read the contract at MEPS and ask questions with the person because they'll tell you everything if yu have a question. If you do it it will be a good experience.

Three years active national guard, with a 5 year call back period after that. Don't be a damn fool. You can count on as much as 8 years full active duty, with the way things are going. The experience isn't worth sh**, and the same money could be had working at Wal-mart. The bonus is jack, and is spread out over your whole term. You want adventure? Join the police force or fire department, or go sky diving.

The contractual obligation is always 8 years, however after your active obligation is complete, the remainder is inactive reserve. Now that we're on a war-time footing, people in inactive reserve status have been activated, which can legally happen. And once you are active during a time of war, you are obligated "for the duration plus six months".

It doesn't. When GWB declared his unilateral war he decided that he could decide also how long people should be able to be recalled into the service. For the first time in history people are doing many "hitches" and the National Guard, instead of staying to guard our borders and this country's streets are being sent to war. Don't do it right now if you really want just three years.

The recruiter isnt lying to you, what he is saying is that you can do 3 years of active duty and can do the rest of your commitment on inactive duty status unless there is a war then they cn activate you

at the end of the three years, you could get caught up in Stop Loss, which means they can refuse to let you go into IRR.

If you are not willing to take the chance of being called up during your time in IRR, or to Stop Lossed, then don't enlist.

Please, please read these links before you make any decisions. You won't be out in 3 years unless you're with the angels.
Yes. They're lying to you. That's their job, to get bodies. Do a search on recruiters lie.
Don't believe anyone who gets on here & tells you otherwise - they're probably recruiters! Read about the stop-loss policy; don't believe someone who pats you on the head and says don't worry, that won't happen to YOU.
