I'm trying to adopt a yorkie online and the people I'm trying to adopt her from sent me her AKC number and her CKC number. Is it possible for a dog to be registered with AKC and CKC or is this some sort of scam?

Yes, this is way they mean with someone says a dog is dual registered. The dog is registered with 2 or more different registies. I.e. AKC, CKC, UKC, etc.

If the dog is AKC (American Kennel Club) and CKC (Canadian Kennel CLub) that is great..otherwise the CKC is not something ot be bothered with.
CKC as in Canine Kennel Club or COntinental Kennel club is nothing more then scam registries. These are registries used by irresponsible breeders and having dual registry which uses one of these is not a "selling" feature or important.
While AKC is a reputable, legit registry it does not by any means mean that just because a dog is registered with them that it is produced by a responsible breeder or is even of good quality. I would certainly question the responsability of a breeder who dual registered with AKC & a scam registry..it would be a major red flag.

akc is short for the American Kennel Club. CKC is short for the Canadian Kennel Club. There is no scam here, they can be registered to both. It all depends if they are shown /bred in Canada, then they must be registered to the CKC or in America, then the AKC. If she if registered to both, you got a champ. The ones that say this is a scam, are, sorry, idiots and should not be even answering this question. Canadians also have a registered club to.

Is the CKC you refer to the Canadian Kennel Club ( http://www.ckc.ca/en/ ), or the Continental Kennel Club ( http://www.continentalkennelclub.com/ )?

The answer either way is "yes".

The Continental Kennel Club is a scam registry. They will registry anything, even mutts. Don't waste your money on this.

If the dogs parents were registered 1 with the AKC and 1 with the Canadian Kennel Club, if you jump through all the hoops, it is possible to get a dog dual-registered in both. However, if you live in the US, there is no need to register the dog in the Canadian Kennel Club, only the AKC. You likely won't be doing anything in Canada with the dog (shows, competition events such as agility and obedience, etc.)

I recommend avoiding breeders that deal with the Continental Kennel Club. It is often an indication of a puppy mill.

No, its possible for dogs to be double registered. Its not a scam at all. My mom's show boxer is AKC and CKC. You can choose to just register your dog as AKC, you don't need to do both if you don't want to.

Add on: I disagree with the previous poster saying the Canine Kennel Club is a scam. They require a picture to determine the breed of the dog and if they can't determine it from the photo they require DNA testing before they will register a dog with the CKC. My mom's dog is doubly register and is a finished AKC champion, out of champions. CKC does not imply that all people using that registry are puppymillers. My mom is selling her pups with both AKC and CKC registration and she is no puppy miller. She breeds for quality and show dogs. Its not fair to lump all people together and assume all CKC registrants are puppy millers.

It is possible, they are just two different breed clubs. However you don't have to register under both clubs if you don't want to pay twice. Different clubs charge different amounts to register puppies, also some unscrupulous puppy millers who AKC has banned simply switch to another breed club to register their puppies under so they can say they are 'registered' and charge more. It's not the canine kennel club, its the continental kennel club.

And more than likely if you are in the states, the puppies you are seeing can be registered with the Continental Kennel Club or AKC (American Kennel Club). It's not likely to be the Canadian Kennel Club unless you are in Canada.
