Perhaps you could clarify the question some. What do you mean by respect? Do you mean treating them like a person? Do you mean talking to them in a manner which is not demeaning.

Mentally ill individuals garner the same level of respect as anyone else. As I matter of fact I am both of these things, bipolar and borderline personality. I get along fabulously with my brother and four sisters, I take my nieces and nephews places and I visit my sisters for holidays and everything. Pretty much I am a normal person in all appearences and I expect to be treated with respect by my family, my friends and my coworkers.

I do want to give you the benefit of the doubt however and think that perhaps you are asking the question that my sisters and I ask about the youngest, who is extremely Borderline. She makes extremely poor and impulisive decisions, is reckless, dates unwisely and the list goes on. We are all pretty sure we will attend her funeral.

I love her dearly. I respect her as a human being deserves to be respected. I DO NOT CONDONE her actions, her decision, her dating habits, and I AM NOT her punching bag, or the one who is responsible for picking up the pieces. I simply won't do it. She missed an important medical test, or actually chose not to go, because she said no one could take her. I hate a job interview and another sister was out of town. That was not our job.

When you are asking a question like this it helps to state what behaviors or what reasons, might induce a lack of respect because just by virute of being a human being a person deserves respect.

You can give someone this basic respect by treating them as you would want to be treated without giving in to them or letting them run the show.

Yes I would respect them. No I would not condone or abide by all their decisions.

And remember all bipolars, borderlines or both do not fall into the same category. There are different characteristics and aspects to each individuals illness. Illness never gives anyone the right to disrespect anyone else. You may however have a much different relationship.

Oh Yes I would! Everyone deserves respect! Everyone is different in a thousand ways! I try to be kind, compassionate, understanding and accepting to all! It is how I like to be treated! I am bipolar and I have disassociative disorder! (d.i.d.) I am sorry to say my brothers and sister do not understand my d.i.d. But they do accept me and respect me for who I am! Bipolar and borderline personality disorder does not make you any less of a person then they are. We have to control these disorders with medication, but so does a person that has other illnesses too. I hope you are respected if you have these disorders or I hope you will respect them if they do! You are all important and I'm sure loved by many others! Good luck in your life in all that you do! hugs! Von

Well this isnt exactly the same but its similar. I have been diagnoses with major reoccurring depression, social anxiety and general anxiety and my family doesnt treat me any differently but then again then don't know what I did last January

My sister also suffers but from more, she also has depression, social anxiety, general anxiety. PTSD (post traumatic stree syndrome) paranoia among other issues. I'm not sure what caused the PTSD, when I visit my mom and sister (she lives with mom) we dont discuss it and my other sister isn't sure either.

I guess she does get treated a little differently. We somewhat go out of our way not to mention dad (don't have a clue about that one, only that it can upset her) and I have to try and keep my son quiet (4 years old) and his screaming whether good or bad and his loudness can cause my sister to get upset. Sometimes it feels like I'm walking on egg shells when I go visit

I don't have any mental disorders.. just a lot of stress, but, I'm sorta treated like a black sheep if anything.... but if you or your sibling has those things... read up on it!... knowledge is power.... it will help to understand the disorders.... don't be ashamed of it or be afraid to get treatment... love doesn't judge... BPD I've heard can be caused from emotional trauma... hope you've not had it that rough... anyways, good luck!

Suffering from one of those conditions, I expect, deserve, and receive the same amount of respect from my 3 brothers as they give each other. Course it isn't much but I am treated the same irregardless.

Yeah, of course you would. they're still people. imagine if you were bipolar and everyone treated you like s.hit. just because of a medical disorder. and that's how serial killers are made.
