YOU CAN'T. Major credit card is required, though you can pay for the rental in cash when you return the car.

I work for a rent a car company that will not take a check for a rental. Think about it, they are giving you a car and you could simply stop the check as soon as you leave. That is why they want a credit card. I am going to assume that you do not have a credit card and that is why you are asking this question. A possible solution is to have a friend with a credit card rent the car and you sign on as an additional driver. You can then pay your friend back with the check.

You cannot rent a car with a personal check, or even cash. This allows them to assure payment and have a way to pay for damages you may cause to the car.
