Well, in my state, the liquor stores are open on Sundays; and the Sabbath is Friday Sundown to Saturday Sundown, if you check your Bible! :)
As far as a day off, I work in a store that is open every day. I always work weekends, and I get 1 or 2 days off during the week. No problem! :)

This is because the financial institutions which issue the loans and run the credit checks are closed on sundays prohibitting them from doing business in their normal manner.
The cost of sunday processsing if it were available to them would be double and it would severely limit their profit margin.
This is why they are closed on sundays. It is so annoying right!

I had the impression Pennsylvania still a some “Blue (Sunday Closing) Laws” till recently. Almost all the car dealerships are open on Sunday where I live. Well most Christians have the Sabbath on Sunday anyway, so laws were passed to ban working on Sunday. When was a child more stuff was closed on Sunday now almost nothing is.

Not all car dealerships are closed on Sundays depending on the location and the presence of Carmax.
Montgomery (in some municipalities like Rockville) and Howard counties in MD sell cars on Sundays - both have CarMax locations. {EDIT} Many banks now have 24x7 operations centers which can issue credit authorizations either automatically or with human intervention. {/EDIT}
Some counties in VA also sell cars on Sundays.
The rest of the country still observes the blue laws for Sunday car sales.

I have been in the Automotive industry for over 20 years. The dealers began to close on Sundays in order to let us have time with our families and recharge our batteries since a good majority of us work 10-12 hours a day 6 days a week in some cases.

Well that goes way back , even before prohibition, back to our country's founding fathers.
It all started with the "Blue Laws"
A blue law, in the United States, is a type of law designed to enforce moral standards, particularly the observance of Sunday as a day of worship or rest. Most have been repealed or are simply unenforced, although prohibitions on the sale of alcoholic beverages, and occasionally almost all commerce, on Sundays are still enforced in many areas. In some places blue laws may be enforced due to religious principles, but others are retained as a matter of tradition or out of convenience.
Hope this Helped

Cant get financing approved is a partial reason. But mainly, they just don't sell many cars. Some around here have tried it and went back to closing. That and their people want & need a day off. Lots of folks in the car sales business work 6 days.

If you are going to buy a car, and the dealership is open Sunday do you buy 2 of them instead? If it is closed Sunday, do you just never buy a car? Of course not. Dealerships here realized many years ago the salesmen had no family time, and they didn't make any more money they just spread it around, so every major dealership started closing Sunday the same week.
By the way, haven't you noticed an increase in youth crime and violence since Sunday shopping came in? More and more youths stealing and vandalizing cars, joining gangs etc, because there is no family day left for much of our society. No more Sunday picnics for staff of major stores, because they are open Sundays. So many nice things lost, all in the name of the almighty dollar.

Look up "Blue laws" Although blue laws requiring Sunday church attendance disappeared in the nineteenth century because they violated citizen’ rights to religious freedoms, other blue laws have continued to exist into the modern era. In Texas, for example, blue laws prohibited selling house wares such as pots, pans, and washing machines on Sunday until 1985, and car dealerships in the state continue to operate under blue-law prohibitions. Many states still prohibit selling alcohol on Sunday, although it’s now the second busiest shopping day of the week.

most loans are not processed the same day, it usually takes a couple of days, most people who drive a car off the lot, are not even approved yet! Sundays are just slow days, believe me, I work at a dealership that is open sundays, and it is not our bussiest day.
