Well, that all depends. Everyone's body and flexibility are different. You definitely do not want to rip or tear a muscle, tendon or ligament.

You should always stretch, knowing how you are feeling in the muscle at the time, slowly into the desired position. You should never feel pain. You want to feel a little bit of a stretch though.

There is no exact amount of time specified for any stretch. But, you don't want to stretch it for more than 10 to 15 seconds without relaxing the muscle. This break allows blood flow and oxygen back to the muscle. Any more and it could cost you a trip to see the doc.

You should stretch each muscle for 20-30 seconds.

while doing stretches, each stretch should last for 8-10 seconds to be effective.
