Before I take him to the vet and spend a fortune I was hoping to find something I could do for him at home that may avoid a trip to the vets. Of course if he needs it I will take him so don't give me any comments on neglecting my cat please.
He has had runny eyes for a week and my aunt (who works with a cat care facility) has helped a great bit but no is out of town. He has a cold (resp. infection). I know for a human you rarely have to go to the doc so I was hoping I could do something for him first. He is eating fine and I have been making sure he is drinking plenty but his eyes are runny, his nose is warm and dry, and he has been sneezing and coughing alot. Oh, please does anyone have helpful advice? I would be very appreciative.

I know there are eye drops for cats. You might be able to get them at the pet store. Maybe try some warm chicken broth? The oils in chicken act an a natural cold buster. Won't hurt the cat any.

What was your aunt doing for him? Perhaps you could call her for some advice? Something you could do to make him more comfortable?

If you have a really nice vet like I do (small town), maybe you could call them and just ask what you can do? My kittens had diarrhea, so I called her and she said to drop by and pick up some stool containers to collect some poop. She said keep an eye on it and if it doesn't clear up on it's own in two days to bring some poop in for testing. It cleared up. In your case, it's been going on for a week. A phone call is free and the worst that will happen is they will be too busy to talk to you. Doesn't hurt to ask.

Yes you need a vet as soon as possible. It could be distemper and antibotics are needed. This could turn fatal fast. The upper-resp. thing is very common but this is truly a vet call. It can be a really hard thing to see a cat slowly going down hill till nothing can be done. Don't wait for the best answer and pick the needed answer now. Evita

You have no other choice but to take him to the vet right away. An upper respiratory Infection can be very dangerous in cats and highly contagious. I t sounds like he is very ill. I know the vet can be expensive but if you take him now, it will be cheaper in the long run. Hope kitty gets well soon.

Well, a cold is a virus and it has to run its course. If he is eating and drinking well, that is a good sign. Many don't eat when they get stuffy noses. The vet can give you eye medications to help him feel better, and antibiotics to help prevent secondary bacterial infections (some colds can turn into pneumonia). Meds help them feel better just like they do us when we have colds.

He needs to see a vet. When I first got my cat, her eyes got runny...but she acted like she was all right. It turned out to be a pneumonia.
