LDS is short for Latter-Day Saint from the name of our church "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints". More commonly, we are known as Mormons. And you are exactly right, we are Christian.

Latter Day Saint = Mormons (LDS is just an abbreviation)
The church is actually called "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints" but TCJCLDS was just too much bother.

LDS = Latter Day Saints.
It is an acronym for the Mormon Church.
Though the Mormons believe in many of Jesus' teachings, they do not believe in His Deity, and consequently deny the Doctrine of the Trinity, both of which are marks of the Christian faith.
The Mormons are therefore not a Christian denomination.
