If you think about it, there isn't much water in the Arab world, where Islam was born. It seems natural that they would want to keep at least one hand clean as best they could, and most humans are right-handed. It probably doesn't have a truly "spiritual" origin, other than perhaps one of the early church leaders gave it out as a piece of good advice. It's similar to circumcision in Jews, really it's just a hygenic thing that became religious dogma. There are probably several more examples from every religion in the world that's been around more than a few hundred years.

It is a cultural custom. In the middle and near East, the left hand is used as the "toilet hand"--to wipe after relieving one's self. This constant exposure to "uncleanness", even after washing, leaves a mental stigma against the left hand. KNOWING that hand is constantly used for that purpose makes it "unclean" for "clean" jobs, even after being thouroughly scrubbed.

Think about it: even after a serious treatment with bleach, lysol, and Era detergent, and a thourough rinsing, would YOU eat a steak dinner off of a toilet lid? I highly doubt it! The mental image of what that lid comes from would kill off your appetite! Somehow, all the Ajax in the world would not make it "clean" enough to serve food on, no matter how sterile it actually is.

I believe mainly a cultural thing. Much of the Arab world is desert or near desert and as such using water for unnecessary washing is kind of foolish. Hence, reserve one hand for unclean things, and try not to contaminate clean things with that hand.

My cousin did a nanny stint over there, and she had to ummm, *borrow* toliet paper from hotels, because they do use their left hand for ummm, what you said, and the right hand to eat...... IF caught in a crime the right hand was taken off, or used to be that way, so they starved to death, if they did not starve or look skinny, ppl would know they were eating with their left *dirty* hand....... God bless

That's what I've heard as well. The right hand is for eating, etc... I guess living in a desert, one has to do whatever they can to keep clean.
