That happen to mine the first few weeks when i was playing 12 hours str8. But after i broke it in it can go for even longer without that problem. What i did what put a towel in the freezer and under the ps3 once it was cool

First, I would be very surprised because the ps3 has a less than .5% failure rate, then I would say "at least I'm not doomed to the red lights of death like every other 360 user is due to a hard ware flaw" (source>http://money.cnn.com/2007/07/05/technology/microsoft_charge.reut/index.htm?cnn=yes)
And then I would call up sony and they would replace it free of charge.

my friend has one and he constantly has to run a fan near it, overheating is one of the many problems with the ps3

my is fine, it does get really hot but it can take a lot of heat, ive played 3 hrs straight and no problem at all
