Beans have the ability to add iron to your diet, while providing fiber that may help lower your cholesterol.

You want to be careful with fruit as it has a lot of sugar. Veggies are always good. Nuts have a lot of fat, but they are good for you in measure. Fish is a great source of lean protein and should be a staple of your diet. Brown rice and beans are not bad for carbohydrates. Chicken breast is a very good lean protein which bodybuilders use to build muscle without putting on fat, and it's pretty easy to prepare. If you eat red meat, which you should do sparingly, try to buy the 90-94% lean variety, which doesn't taste very good, but is much better for you than the regular fatty stuff you can get. Eggs are great in the morning. Make sure to take some kind of vitamin supplement as you will be cutting certain foods out of your diet and you have to get the nutrients they would from somewhere. Obviously avoid fast food, and fad diets. Good luck!

Spinach and liver are both very high in iron. They are fairly economical too. To lower cholesterol cut down on fat in your diet and increase your exercise (I know you said you were trying to walk daily; that should do it). Make sure you get enough protein in your meals. Peanut butter is economical but can be high in fat.

Good luck and DON'T SKIP MEALS while you are anemic. Make sure you rest more too.
