I hate to sound curt about it but, they are doing that because the parents, who happen to own the schools, haven't organized and gone over to the school and Board of Education and fired their asses.

You are right, there are countless ethnic groups in the United States of America;however, if you look at demographics the biggest ethnic group and the one with most cultural influence due to historical and geographical reasons is Latinos, specially the ones who speak Spanish. That's why, most people are wanting to learn Spanish....but you are not forced to do so. You will do better if you learn other language, specially in a country with such a diverse population(in certain states). That's just as a result of globalization. Like wise people in other countries want to learn english because they may get better jobs and speaking more than one language opens up your entire perspective in life.

Chosen by whom? By those who insist on calling themselves Caucasian, but without the slightest inkling of what the term Caucasian means or how it is spellt? Or by those whose lips will move when they read this answer?

The majority language in the United States of America may well be English; but the majority language of America as a whole - which comprises, probably to the surprise of many, of some 20 countries, is Spanish, and some 25 million of its speakers are native-born American citizens. That means that there are more native born Americans who have Spanish as a first language (and I am not talking about immigrants or children of immigrants) than the entire population of some other countries.

Because with alot of careers, such as ones in medicine, law and public relations, the ability to speak spanish ups your pay check. Also it is a sad attempt to try and make American's as aware as the rest of the world.

In lots of European countries most of the population speaks not only their native language but English as well. Besides all that, minorities like Mexicans are the ones actually having kids, you'll need to know Spanish when you're the minority.

Well, Eng is not a language. It is the name of one of two famous Siamese brothers who lived in the XIX century, Chang and Eng.
Now, back to the languages, Japanese, Polish, etc, are not so common in the USA. The largest minority in the USA are Spanish speaking people. It is a matter of common sense learning Spanish. Besides, as they say here, it doesn't hurt.
Of course, if you want to learn Japanese, Polish, Hungarian, etc, be my guest, but like Mark Twain said in one of his books:
Lance Williams learnt the language of the Choctaw Indians, but where he lived there were no Choctaws until finally came one to dig his grave ( Lance's grave )

Tons of Spanish people are in America now. It is the second most popular language, and more Spanish people come all the time. In order to have good buisness skills, u need to be able to speak Spanish. (maybe more so in some states than others, but still..) My dad owns his own buisness, and lost tons of potenial custumers, because he wasn't bilingual. however, my mom took spanish classes and it is really helping her in her career. Also, children learn better & more than adults, if u wait until u r an adult to learn spanish, it will be harder to learn. Why spanish? Like i said spanish is the 2nd most popular in our country. in most high schools, to graduate u need at least 2 years of foreiggn language, but u can pick any language, not just spanish. Also, spanish is easier than most other languages. I am inn my 2nd year of spanish, & i found out how similar it is to english. Like map-mapa, history-historia, and train-tren. I hope u c my point!

They offer others in school too....but the Spanish culture is increasing in US of America so it makes sense to speak it. There is no official U.S. language, only that English is preferred.

Secondly, Spanish speakers make up a majority of central and south American countries so its not a 'minor' language, but a language of many countries.

The only other rival is Chinese, which is just a countrry with a lot of people. I learned Chinese instead of Spanish.

Frankly, Im sick of people thinking all we need is English. We live in a globalizing world and our kids arent just competing within our nation but competing around the globe. Europeans have been learning English only because U.S. and England were the dominant power for the past 400 years. There is no chance this is lasting forever, especially when China is rising up to be the next or sharing the roll of superpower. If you want to stay ahead, adopt instead of complaining about why we need to learn another langu age.

Because there are not that many Polish or Japanese immigrants. However there is a great influx of Spanish speaking immigrants. If for example you would want to manage a warehouse or manufacturing place a lot of the employees could be Mexican. It would be a definite plus if you could give them instructions in their own language. It is something a lot of employers are looking for when they recruit supervisors or managers.

Because Mexicans make up a much larger
minority than Poles or Asians of any sort.
But if you want to learn how to speak Japan-
ese or Polish, no one is going to stop you.
And, in the meantime, while you are learning
those two languages, most of the Polish,
Japanese, Mexican... and, what the heck...
even Chinese immigrants who can't speak
English well will be learning how to speak
this country's "first language."
(That is to say... most of them, anyway.)

Well, gee... that sure does sound like a fair
deal to me!

Have fun.

Because like it or not. The people we will deal most with are Spanish speakers. Also, most educated people in other countries usually speak a couple of different languages and chances are that Spanish will be one of them. In that case you can speak to almost anybody.
