Put some WD-40 on it. it should loosen. Try using a wrench also, i suppose if you use pliers on one side to hold it and a wrench that fits the nut on the other side you should have better luck.

nuts are loosened with wrenches, not pliers. you always need the right tool for the job. almost all bikes are metric. most likely a 15mm, 14mm, or 13mm pliers or the wrong wrench will make your problem permanent. if it is rusted spray it with some lube or knock-r-loose and let if sit for a few. a decent sized adjustable wrengh is better than pliers if you don't have metric wrenches, or bring it to a bike shop.

Never use pliers on a nut of that size, you will eventually round off the corners. Try using two 15 mm wrenches on the axle nuts, one on each side and turn COUNTER-CLOCKWISE to loosen.

Please don't use pliers or vice grips. You will wreck the nut. Use a box end wrench of the proper size. Two wrenches actually, put one on each nut on either side of the axle. It will come off easy.

Get a girlfriend.

ba dum bum

Seriously, put away the pliers. If you don't know enough to use a proper wrench, you probably ought to take it to a bike shop.

unloosened = tightened. why do you want to tighten the nut if it is already very tight and won't loosen?

thanks for the two points anyways.

try heating the nut with a torch and spraying a penetrating solvent on it. (aerokroil is best) Repeat this process several times until it is loose.
