I just asked my friend who has a fascination in all thing paranormal and she said that it's because there is an entity in the person's home and it is a way of giving that entity recognition that it's there. Just like you would continue keeping a photo displayed of a loved one who passed away, but in this case, since you don't know the person or have a photo, you leave the empty frame up instead.
Sounds weird to me, but I don't put stock in any of this nonsense. Which is why I had to ask her. lol

It means that their pictures were robbed. Luckily, your spiritualist buddy has such bad taste in frames that the robbers didn't even want them.

That they don't understand what tehy believ, spiritualism is made up through the concept that the soul is immortal, and restless unless something special is done. They think certain objects act as vectors for these spirits. But I think it's all hooey.
