My mom gets a lice comb and we try to comb my hair every so often. And try to find the source of lice that way once they're gone they won't come back! And maybe when they're gone shampoo with the lice shampoo for a few days to be sure there are no lice!

We used mayo and/or olive oil. We got our information on it from the Visiting Nurses Association. The key to using Mayo/olive oil is that you have to redo the treatment on a set schedule. Days 1 (when you first get notice of the lice), 3 ,5, 7 and 14. You need to make sure you use enough to coat all the hair and use a plastic shower cap ($1 at walmart) to cover their hair for 6-12 hours. Then wash it out really well And comb out nits. Also make sure you put your brushes and combs into water you had boiled.
To keep lice away
* put your girls hair up as tight as you can use mousse and hair spray.
* Lice actually like clean hair so don't wash their hair every day.
* I have heard Tea Tree oil works well mixed in your shampoo but I have never personally tried it
Good luck!
EDIT***
Its easier to see the nits in sunlight.

With five children, I have had too much experience with head lice. The only effective way I found to get rid of them was to wash the hair with Rid and comb out the nits with the comb that comes with the shampoo. Remove all bedding including the mattress pads and wash it all with hot water and bleach. Dry it on the highest setting. Before putting new bedding on their beds, spray the mattresses with lice spray. Also, spray the carpeting around. To be extra careful, spray all cloth surfaces that their hair has touched. I would reshampoo after a week just to be sure. Maybe, I didn't have to do all that but the lice didn't come back.

HEAD LICE IS NOT FUN!!
well the best way to rid your girls hair of these horrible bugs is to buy heaps of conditioner (cheap) and apply it to dry hair and use a metal nit comb and comb each time wiping the comb on a white tissue. Do this until there are no more.
Then apply the treatment shampoo just incase.
This needs to be repeated every 7 days for a month for best results.
Every surface also needs to be treated. Car seats, bedding, couchs, prams etc. i sugesset bug spray or tea tree oil spray.
To further prevent re infestation apply moose to your children's hair before kindy school or childcare and put it up if possible.
Hair brushes should be put in an airtight bag and frozen overnight this will kill them.

Wash and dry everything you can, including the covers to car seats/boosters ( a much overlooked item)Any thing that cannot go int he washer should be sealed in a plastic bag for 2-3 weeks and then vacuumed. Vacuum your carpet every day. Change the sheets daily while you are treating. Like the others said, you must get out every little nit (white egg stuck on the hair shaft, the dead ones are flaky like dandruff.) Keep combing through every night even though you don't shampoo. There is no way to keep lice away or prevent your children from getting it. teaching them not to share items is your best defense.

first off -- all the nits have to be picked out by hand --- sorry this will take some time -- but if you don't get them all out it will just keep reaccuring also remember to take care of all items that had touched their heads----
My daughter had a reacurring case due to someone in her class not taking care of the problem --- After treating a few times with the medicated shampoo and also trying tea tree oil --- I found that buying a ton of cheap conditioner and every time you wash their hair put a TON in as normal and let sit in for 15 -20 mins or longer and wash out -- it will suffocate any remaining --- also if you out lots of a leave in conditioner or something similar afterwards it will not allow the lice and nits to stay! (i also used the electric comb as a back up,) but found the conditioner the best thing!
hope this helps!

some people use mayo...otherwise i would cut their hair short...wash everything you can...everything else put in a plastic bag and seal up for 2-3 weeks and go through their hair a few times a day 2-4 and pick out each lice and their nits...my daughter had a horrible time with them 2 years ago bc the school didnt do a thing about it...if you cant stop them you dr and prescribe a shampoo that does really good...i got it for my daughter and she hasnt had them since. good luck..it can be costly, time consuming, and hard on the kids =o[

my wife and had this issue with our oldest child when she was in elementary school. We used all the over the counter stuff to no avail. Disposed of all her stuffed animals, bleached the brushes and combs, bagged up all her coats and stuck em in the dryer too. We did what ever we could with the information that was provided to us from the local schools and the health care department. this went on for two years. We told the school it was coming from there. No one else in the family had the issue. Just our daughter and a few other girls in her school.
We did something I learned from a friend from the south. We took a three day weekend and bought crisco, yes crisco and caked her hair in it and then put her on a shower cap to help with suffication and the mess after wards.
Now my daughter had hair down to the middle of her back so this was a daunting thing to deal with.
We let it sit for 48 hrs and when it came time to clean it was much easier to come through after washing and using the nit comb. We checked for about 2 weeks after and she had no issues from there...
It also helped that the school had removed the old carpets and replaced them with new ones and no one else reported any issues with lice after that..

I have been teaching school for 14 years and have seen more than my share of head lice. To get rid of the nits, you can put mayo, olive oil, or baby oil in the hair. With a fine tooth comb, you can comb the nits out (use small sections of hair). Wash and repeat. Also, vacuum your carpets with a clean bag and discard afterwards. You need to wash any bedding and clothing in hot water and place in a hot dryer.
For stuffed toys, you need to put those in a plastic bag and tie it up for several day. You can also put those in the dryer if you can. To prevent any further incidents, make sure your children's extra clothing and hats are marked with their name.
Also if any of your children have long hair, you can pull it up in a tight ponytail and put hairspray on the hair.
hope this helps.

diesel fuel works best to get rid of all the lice and nits it makes combing SOO much easier but you need to make sure you dont get it in her eyes by putting a towel over her face and you apply all around the hair until the hair is all wet with the fuel you leave it in for 30 min and wash out throughly because you can smell it still if you dont wash it out well also use white vinegar to comb the eggs and nits out this is what worked for me
day 1- apply diesel fuel
day 3- lice killing shampoo
day 13- reapply lice killing shampoo
day 15- apply diesel fuel
....during those days check through her hair and comb out what you see with white vinegar
i can garentee they will be gone
make sure you wash and dry all her sheets and put all her stuffed animals in bags for 2 weeks
after all the lice is gone keep checking her hair to make sure they didnt come back
