I was not at all insinuating that only religious people are selfless. Many times I find the opposite to be true...

Pickle - I didn't know a true Christian couldn't answer this question. I didn't mean to bring out or approach anyone's limitations. I was simply trying to bring awareness to the importance of doing things for others. I do however, have issue with religions, or anyone, that tells me I "can't" do something. Not in a disrespectful way but it seems a narrow minded way of thinking. I am open about virtually every aspect of things I do so I didn't realize some might not "be able to" answer this.

I wasn't asking anyone to brag, just looking for some great examples of doing great things for others...simple as that. I didn't think that would be so difficult to answer.

This past school year I had a student that became my assistant. She had been my student the year before in physical science, so I knew her a little. We had time to talk and I saw how difficult life was for her. She is the the ONLY member of her family that has not been to jail. She is the ONLY member of her family to graduate high school without having had a child first. Guidance counselors and other teachers abhorred her and her family, but I saw a good person that was a lot like me (a long time ago). I bought her graduation stuff (the basics these days run into the $100's) and helped her get into a college with a pell grant. She is leaving soon and I am buying stuff she will need for the fall semester. Now I am not wealthy, I live on the fringes of the ghetto here and not a day goes by that some gang-banger doesn't harass me, but the money was worth it. The clothes I didn't buy, even the birthday presents my son didn't get, were all worth it. This is why I became a teacher, to make a difference in somebody's life. I wish we could all do such acts of kindness.

I believe selfless means you don't do it for the credit or for others to know about how wonderful you are. I want to thank you for this question because it made me realize that as a young child I grew up on the T V show "The Lone Ranger."
Him and his Indian Sidekick always came to the rescue of others. No matter what the problems of the people were they appeared, saved the day and always disappeared before anyone could even say "thank you". You helped realize where
I learned that from. (That and Hebrews 13:2-3)
In the next week I am launching my biggest selfless project. It is a website named whydoiweep.org designed to help runaways, homeless families, and those wanting recovery.
God has led me to do this and even though I get scared sometimes, I know He is in control. The plan is to start raising money, start using it in my community and then spreading in all four directions.
Thank you again...you have been a Godsend
God bless you

If I tell you what I have done that is selfless, I lose my humility. If I am to be selfless I must practice humility. I am such a selfish person that if I do not practice humility I might get drunk again. I try to help other drunks when I can, but I can not teach them how to get drunk. They know how to get drunk. They do not know how to stop drinking. If they ask for help I can tell them how I stopped drinking. It is selfish of me to want to live, but I have been to hell and have returned to the real world.

I don't believe that is something I should share as a Christian because if it wasn't for the Lord I wouldn't do anything for anyone but myself.
Prior to that my life was self-centered just like every unsaved person - whether they will admit it or not. If you don't believe that consider this - If it came down to your life or someone else dying who do you "honestly" think would live? It is very easy to give the answer everyone thinks they would like to hear, but reality is that the worldly mind looks out for # 1 when it comes down to the nitty gritty of life.

i found a wallet full of cash. I was not tempted to take b/c I knew that if i were to lose that much money I would want it returned to me. I also knew that I would be blessed either that day or in the future. I turned the wallet back in and I received 20.00 back.. It wasn't much but I felt good about my good deed.

I didn't do it just to brag about it on the internet...
Edit: I didn't mean to offend... If you're looking for suggestions, take five dollars and walk down a city street. Talk to people and use those five dollars in a creative way to make someone's day. It doesn't have to be big, for example, just offer to buy someone ice cream, or if you see a homeless person, offer to buy him lunch at McDonald's or somewhere else inexpensive.

Wow.
I'm not sure I've ever done anything truly selfless.
Great. now I am going to feel bad for a while.....but I know God may still give me the chance. And I pray I'll see it when it comes and do it. That's the kind of person I want to be.

I let them move in until they got on their feet. Rent free so they could save their money. I even got them around to where they wanted to go and brought groceries for them.
