I forgot my purse one night on my way home from work. I came to a check point and told the officer what happened. He gave me a warning ticket and then said to me in a very stern voice, "I'm going to ask you something and you can not lie to me. If you lie to me I'll know and you will get in a lot of trouble. When was the last time you smoked pot?"

I was so freaked out I lied and said, "two months ago." I don't smoke- I'm too old for that. I was scared that if I said I wasn't a smoker he would yank me out of my car.

They can ask you anything...and if you want to incriminate yourself, well, go ahead and tell him....

I would smile broadly and ask the officer:

"When was the last time you beat your wife?"

You should never mislead or lie to an officer, but you do have the right to not incriminate yourself. I'd tell him that you do not smoke pot (if this is the truth).

I'll be watching this question to learn more about how pot smokers address this question.

He was allowed to ask you, but he was bluffing with that whole line about being able to tell whether you're lying.

I would have said, "I'm a law-abiding citizen and I haven't done anything to warrant that sort of the question, but because I have no interest in prolonging this - I've never smoked pot and I resent the insinuation. Now please let me go get my purse."

I would have answered "I'm not going to lie to you, I find the question offensive. If you really want to ask it, put it in writing and sign it with your identification number. Would you like to borrow a legal pad?"

My response would be "I don't smoke my pots, I paint them and have them fired in a kiln, why? Are you considering ceramics as a part-time hobby?"

And of course then I'd go to jail lol .... seriously, just say never.

A cop shouldn't ask such loaded questions, as it just assumes guilt without any proof. If it happens again, just tell the cop "OK officer, I won't lie to you. NONE OF YOUR DAMN BUSINESS."

Yes it is legal for them to ask you. What did you answer?

If he suspected you of being high, he had every right to ask you that.

They used to ask "When did you stop beating your boy friend?"

He can ask anything he wants. You do not have to answer.
