You can usually call a vet for emergencies after hours call all in your area til you find one with an emergency number) - they will have an emergency number.....Chocolate doesn't always mean death...so calm down...If you cannot get a hold of a vet try calling the ASPC animal poison control hotline for help...dogs react depending on health and size and amount they ate....see links below for help..
http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=pro_apcc
call the APCC 24 hours a day (they charge $55 on credit card and this is thru the ASPCA)

When my dog ate a 9 oz chocolate heart (and the foil, and the box), the vet told me to give the dog some hydrogen peroxide. As much as he will drink. (Usually about 4-5 licks for my golden was sufficient) Then wait 15-20 minutes. The dog will puke up all the chocolate. Don't let her eat the barf. Not that my dog tried to eat his barf. Alright, he did, but maybe your friend's dog won't. edit: Yes, call the vet, but don't believe the idiots who are trying to freak you out with the death talk. Hershey's chocolate isn't bad for dogs like baking chocolate is, but it can be. However, dogs also tend to be more resilient than we give them credit for. If the dog is acting sick/strange, then get it to the vet's.

My dog once ate almost a whole chocolate cake. My friends dog ate a bag of hershey's kisses. Both times people freaked out and they were fine.
Chocolate's not good for em, and can lead to a heart attack, but the dog will most likely be fine.
I'm not an expert, but from experience I definitely wouldn't head for the vet unless the dog shows extremely noticable signs of problems.

What kind and how big was the bag? Very important to know. An ounce of bittersweet or baker's can be lethal to a small dog... Can you enlist a neighbor to get the dog to the vet?? At least CALL the vet and let them know what the dog ate. They may have somebody who can come get it if need be. Best to act now! BTW: My sheltie ate a bag of M&Ms and his stomach hemorrhaged from throwing up..it was very serious. Call a vet.

Tell her to give the dog a tablespoon of Hydrogen Peroxide.Just put it in a spoon and slowly pour it into the corner of the dog's mouth until he swallows it.This should make him vomit, and rid himself of the chocolate. DON"T give the mineral oil! If the dog inhales a bit of it,it can cause a very serious aspiration pneumonia, which is often fatal. And,tell us what kind of chocolate, what size bag,and how big is the dog?

relay it depends on the size of the dog and how much chocolate it ate.I know a few dogs that just love chocolate and get a small piece every day for a treat.Just keep an eye on the dog and call a vet as soon as possible.

Try poison control or try at least calling an emergency vet to see if they'll tell you what to do over the phone. Peroxide can be used to induce vomiting and that is what I'd do it if it were my dog but try to check with a vet first.

Bakers chocolate is the one that is really bad for dogs. Milk chocolate is not great for them, but considerably ledd harmful. I would have your friend call an animal hospital and speak to a staff member there. That way she can tell them exactly what king and how much the dog ate. Good luck!

Vomiting

panting
hyperactivity
restlessness
Muscle tremors
heart rate will increase or decrease
irregular heart rhythm
Seizures abdominal pain
blood in urine.
Watch for these symptoms.
I hope this will help. I hope the dog will be ok.
Chocolate can kill a dog. It can put a dog into a coma.

It is probably okay. The chocolate that dogs can not eat is baking chocolate not just a bag of m & m's. The dog should be fine.
