I don't know. In some ways I find it offensive - that I am supposed to accept someone coming up and either assuming that I am Christian or trying to convert me.
I haven't found an approriate reponse. Usually I remain compose and say something such as "I appreciate what you are trying to do, but I do not believe Jesus is the Messiah. Yes, I have read the bible. Yes I have researched the Christian prophecies and have found them lacking. I do not chose to be Christian, and I hope you have a nice day."
I try to make the point clear that I do not care to be converted, especially if it somebody I work with that is trying to do the converting. Or someone that I see all the time.
Remember not to be rude, or hostile. I have seen others react this way and it only makes the situation worse and last longer. Simple, concise and walk away. Don't worry about hurting feelings or being politically correct. But don't be all out rude either.

Love is union. It's as natural as the chemical bonding of two atoms. Any time two things come together in union it is an act of love, however great or small. Some people do indeed seem to be capable of more love than others in a social, emotional, romantic, or spiritual sense. I think a lot of it has to do with how much that person has been loved. It's a lot easier to grow in love when those who are around you love you.

That is a religious man's response. A true man of God would not say such a thing.
A response could be something like, "Yes I know he paved the way, but the one that came after him is the one that is here with me now. And the Christ said he was better that he was anyway. So I'll stick to his teachings seeing as the Holy Spirit is the one now that writes his laws on his peoples hearts and minds."

I believe that people use that Phrase, from kindness,
because they Appreciate the way you are...so I would
say, Just Agree with them....and say, "I'm so glad you
think so, for He's Alive in my Life, and I can feel His
Presence, through your kindness".
Your answer of Thank You, is just sufficient too. They just
needed a reply from you, for their compliment to you...
Perhaps you Radiate the Look of Godliness....Perhaps
they felt that you Needed to Hear Those Words, to
Reassure you, that someone loves you, for sure.....
Feel thankful that they cared enough to say it to you...
many others feel to ashamed to say it to anyone...
you'll be surprised at the respect most people will show
you, when you say it to them, too.

Acts 16:30 And brought them out, and said, Sirs, what must I do to be saved?
Acts 16:31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

What I say in return isn't the appropriate response.
It's a meaningless formality. There is no appropriate response, except the one you pick.
I wouldn't be so hard on "Thanks", especially if it's worked in the past.

Okay...but do you love me? LOL....it really depends on who these people are....if it's in a church setting, well that's probably typical and I wouldn't worry about a "set" response.
Peace, Love, and Blessings
