There is NO WAY the nosie neighbors can pick up your phone conversations if you are using your corded phones. LOL And the frequency that police and fire depts use for their radios is not close to even what a cordless phone uses. LOL Now it is possible that there could be "bleed through" problem to where they could hear your conversation, on their phones. This doesn't happen often, as it use to, but it can happen, and all you have to do is call the local phone company and they can fix that problem. You also should go out to the NI (network interface) box, the box on the side of the house where the phone lines come to the house and make sure it hasn't been tampered with or have a "tap" on it, which is highly unlikely, but possible and it is very ILLEGAL
Good Luck

There's no way anyone can listen to conversations over land lines using a scanner. Land lines use electricity to transfer signals. Cordless and cell phones use radio frequencies to transmitt and can be heard with scanners at the right frequency. The only way to keep the neighbor from listening is to use the land line.

Both my wife and I just use our cells. We couldn't afford a LAN when we first moved in together and we just got used to not having it. We both answer each others cell phones as if it were a land line and have a family plan so in the end, it's just the same but we pay less.

Neither of you need ot use cordless phones. That's how it's picked up. You can't pick up regular old plug in the wall phones, though.

If BOTH the fones are corded, and not cordless, then she has tapped the wire. It is not that hard to do! It is also quite illegal, and you best bet is to call your fone company and tell them. They have ways to test the line for taps.
