They work the same as most commercial toasters. They are hot all the time. A lot of the wait for your home toaster is heating up the element as well as the inside of the toaster slots before the bread starts to brown. When I was in the military, the toasters they had took about the same time as the Subway toasters.

they are like an automated toaster oven with a very high watt element very close to the food.
