I am trying to hang some heavy-ish artwork on the wall, but I don't want to hang them where the studs are. I've tried nails and screws, but it's like my walls are made out of chalk! The nails/screws both pulled out almost immediately.

Suggestions?

Use drywall anchors, they are available at any hardware store. They are plastic or metal sleeves you pound into the drywall and then screw a screw into them. Very secure.

I think you may have to go with the big guns here and that is what is called a toggle bolt. A rather largish hole is required to get the winged part of the bolt in behind the gypsum/drywall. It then spreads out and distributes the weight of a heavy item over a larger part of the wall. These are available from Home Depot or Lowes. I have used them on items that were over 50 lbs. but they do require a sizeable hole which can be intimidating especially if you are renting.

Anchor from the studs at the top of your wall and suspend the artwork with decorative chain (size would depend on size of artwork. You have the option of one "anchor" and attach to each top corner (triangle) or use two with each attached to a corner. There are decorative knobs that can be used as the "anchors". Also looks pretty using just ribbon on lighter projects. You could also attach a 1x2 board between studs and paint wall color to blend.

You need to get some heavy duty plastic inserts that go into the wall and then you can put a good sized screw into the insert. Very common. Any hardware store: Home Depot. Lowes, OSH, etc.

I have been using Hercules Hooks. They are suppose to hold up to 150 lbs. I have not tried to hold up any where near that amount of weight but what I have put up has stayed up.

Go to a place like Home Depot and tell them your predicament and they will lead you to the hangers you need. They sell special ones for just your situation.

THEY HAVE A SPECIAL THING THAT GOES COMPLETELY THROUGH THE WALL AND EXPANDS. IT HOLDS THERE AND THEN YOU CAN HOLD ABOUT ANYTHING WITH IT. IT HAS A BOLT ON THE OUTSIDE OF IT. I AM NOT SURE WHAT IT IS CALLED BUT ANY HARDWARE STORE HAS THEM.
