He doesn't shed now, but if kept healthy will this happen? Is it a pre-determined gene?

yes, it happens to all cats. especially in the spring/fall to change its coat. its no big deal, just brush it regularly. if it has very short hair you might notice it less.

Kittens keep their coat for a long time, but adult cats shed their coats out twice a year--a heavy summer shed with all the underfur being released slowly (or fast depending on how fast it gets hot out), and a winter shed which is a majority of the guard hairs and maybe 20% undercoat.

Cats vary though, not all will shed at the same time. Between our five cats two do it at the same three week span, one starts much earlier, and the other two are staggered after the middle two have finished shedding.

You can reduce the amount of fur on everything by combing or brushing the cat every other day.

Do Kittens Shed

All cats shed, and some long haired ones shed less than short haired, so there is no specific prediction. On the other hand, some short haired cats shed like crazy at times, and hardly at all at other times. The same with longer haired cats.

There are brushes that are claimed to readily remove loose hair better than others. But get a decent brush, and regularly brush or comb your cat. It is not only a good bonding experience, it will cut down on loose hair around the house.

A brush that I particularly like, and is inexpensive, is posted as a link for illustration purposes only. This type of brush is available almost everywhere.

Short haired cats dont shed a lot. But if it is in a cats genes to shed it will. There are cats like the maine coon which is long haired and generally doesnt shed too much. Kittens dont usually shed that much if any. Just try to brush your cat every day if you see signs of shedding and vaccum your house if you have a long haired cat so that you dont get allergies, etc. It will be okay if your cat sheds there are allergy medicines, vaccums, brushes, medications(for hairballs). :]

Most cats do shed as adults. There is a powder that you can get at your vet. office that you can add to his food that is supposed to cut down on the shedding. You can also groom him daily with a soft bristle slicker brush which will catch a large amount of the loose hair.

Anything with hair or fur will shed, including humans.

Daily brushing definitely helps to prevent hairballs and shedding.

Kittens do not shed but it is hard to tell if they would shed when they get older.

It's hard coded, just like a human loses 100-200 hairs every day, cats do too.
