I cannot believe that someone educated ( ?) like a teacher, or anyone else could have the NERVE to ask you that. Its crass and extremely nosy. You may need to say "I prefer not to discuss that now" because you don't! Believe me, the rudeness is all on the part of those asking, not yours.

You can look up at them, smile, and say "No reasonable person would be concerned about money at a time like this." And walk away, leaving them stunned. Their jaws will drop.

A rude answer, maybe. But what a rude question. It deserves an answer that will equalize the impact of the question.

if you can make yourself cry when someone asks you that just start crying and say how could you even ask that in my time of mourning, and walk away...they will just feel bad, or embarrassed and it could make them never ask that question again.

That is a really rude question I can't believe anyone would ask that! Dumb people!

I wouldn't worry too much about being rude.
I would say "That is none of your business."

I'd probably say "Why? Are you looking for a loan???
Or I'd just look at them like I didn't hear them right.....

"My lawyer is handling the estate at this time. I cannot comment."

Or you can just be blunt and say "that's none of your business!"
