She can get on my nerves sometimes its mostly because she never comes to see my son, she is too busy doing other things like going partying and drinking. Its not like her son and I are seperated or anything she just never comes to our house to see her grandson and she lives like a mile away. Other than that I try to keep away from calling her because I dont trust anyone with my personal life issues, I am afraid it will turn into family gossip. Isnt that the reason why mother in laws call anyway to know everything???

For the most part, yes. We've had to learn how to compromise, though, (as have all of her daughters-in-law) because she loves her sons very much and doesn't believe that any woman will take care of them as well as she did. Mothers and sons can have an amazing, special bond, and the mother isn't always willing to give up her place in her son's life. As a new wife, I wanted to create a home and a family in my own way, and it was hard to have her tell me how I should be doing everything. But we worked it all out, with respect. My mom actually helped me out a lot, helping me to understand my mother-in-law's perspective.
I think Wise Guy's answer is interesting, in that it kind of goes on the attack and assumes daughters-in-law are looking for a battle. Men would give you a very different answer to this question than women will, I think, because it's easier to get along with the in-law of the opposite gender ... no competition, no displacing of another's role, and no need to measure up to someone else's standards in quite the same way.

Being polite and distant helps me to cope with ups and downs in our relationship. I always keep in mind that she loves her son first and foremost, so no matter what she does or says i am prepared to take it well.
overall, i try to be objective, fair and polite to her and willing to make compromises if necessaary but i will never ever take
insult or unfair treatment from her.
but luckily for the most part, we get along ok... distance helps too. lol.
