When I took mine I was totally freaked about the whole "getting any topic" and having to write an essay about it in (what is it 20-30 minutes)? The question I got was "What was a problem you had and what were steps you took to overcome it" Needless to say, I wrote that my problem was not having my GED and how friends helped me to get it A. By helping my study B. Lending me books, helping me find GED classes and C. I told how having the GED helped to improve my life. Even though I didn't know if I would pass the essay doesn't have to be truth, they just want to make sure you know how to write.
I remember in the GED classes they had a list of essay questions that some of the other students had gotten. Two I remember were “Would you like to live in the city or a rural area” and “How do you feel about gardening”. It’s been a few years since I’ve taken the test so I’m sorry I don’t remember more. Anyway, I hope this helps a little! Just hang in there I know it’s tough! My GED prep teacher told me that 40% of high school grads can’t pass the GED! So don’t lose heart. In the end I did pass so good luck!

First of all, pick a subject that you are very interested in, or one that you know something about. If you can't come up with an interesting subject, do some research and find something.

Next, start with an introductory paragraph -- something that will catch the eye of the reader and make him want to see more.

Tell how this subject has changed your life, or given you a memorable experience. Introduce some conflict that this subject has helped you to solve. Give some examples of how this subject has brought you joy, or taught you something valuable. Describe the subject in great detail. If your subject is a person, tell about his or her life, or how he or she has overcome some difficulty, and has continued to inspire you.

Finally, end your essay with a provocative thought, something that makes the reader think, or will make him remember your essay. You can end it on a serious or humorous note, that will make him laugh or feel sad.

It's been eons since I have written an essay, so I don't have any off hand. But I hope these suggestions will at least get you started. Good luck!
