My 2 year old was playing with her 8 month old cousin yesterday pretty much all day. Her cousin was acting fussy, loss of appetite, and had an on and off again fever. Well, the parents took her into her pediatrician who said that she had strep throat. I'm wondering how likey it is that my 2 year old will get it? They play with the same toys and the 8 month old is at the drooly stage...so I'm thinking pretty likey huh? Anything I can do to try to prevent it, or is it too late?

It is very contagious in the first 48 hrs. After that when you have had antibiotics in your system the rate of transfer is greatly reduced as time goes by. It would be a good thing to take your child to the doctor at the first sign of any symptoms! I wish you Good Luck and Good Health!

If the rapid strep came up negative, they probably sent it in to the lab. They will call you tomorrow if it is positive. Even if it isn't that, a sore throat is still contagious. No kissing till you feel better. :)

The crazy school nurse where my kids went to elementary school did not realize I am a nurse in a hospital. My son had strep throat and was running a ridiculous high fever, so I took him to the doctor. They gave him some antibiotics and sent us home and told me to keep him out of school for the rest of the week. The school nurse came visiting my house after my son was out for 2 days. She was being a witch and thought for some reason my son was being truant. When I told her the doc told me to keep him out of school for the rest of the week, she was mean and told me he could come back to school after he had been on a prescription for 24 hours.
Needless to say, I spoke with the doctor who told me she was wrong! He said in order for my son not to be contagious, he would need to take the entire prescription in the bottle.
I think you probably will just have to wait this one out and see if your little one gets sick.

She is probably going to ended up with it. Sorry to say.
But as soon as she shows signs of it take her into the doctor to get it taken care of.

Here's my story:
When my daughter was young she was playing with a neighbor boy, well he ended up real sick, found out he had strep.
A week later I called my Pediatrician and told them of her friend having strep and she seemed like she was getting sick. So I took her into the doctor, he checked her said no, no strep....but he didn't do a strep culture, this was just his opinion. I asked him to do a strep culture and he said no, no need for it. So I believed him. She seemed sick for a few days, treated her with tylenol.
Then she seemed to get over it and was better.
We were going to DisneyWorld in Florida for vacation. Everything was fine, after a few days there my daughter broke out in a rash all over her body. We had to take her to an emergency room, her fever was real high too. I told the doctors in the emergency room about her friend having strep. They told me her throat looked fine but they diagnosed her with Rheumatic Fever.
Once we got home from vacation, I took her back to the Pediatrician because I just had a Motherly instinct and asked him to do a strep culture (again), he told me no, no reason to do it.
Then a few days later I ended up as sick as a dog.
It lasted a few days and I just kept getting worse.
I have an Auto-Immune Condition....a muscle weakness problem....so I went to MY doctor.
Here I had strep throat. I told him about my daughter, he said call the Pediatrician and tell him to run a culture on her because you have strep. Called him, again , he said no.
Called my doctor, which was a family physician, and he said to bring her in and he would run a culture on her....it came back severe strep throat on her. I had it, my daughter had it, my husband got it, and we all had to be treated with antibiotics...even my son who was negative but the doctor said he may still come down with it so he should be treated too.
Needless to say I took those medical tests into my Pediatrician and asked for both of my kids records. Sometimes they say you can just be a carrier of strep so that may be why her throat looked fine, cause she was a carrier. But it was just the fact that I had asked numerous times for him to run that simple test, that would not have taken any time at all, and yet he kept refusing. In my mind, thinking he knew it all. Those are not the "good" doctors.
Then we had to worry for 1 year about my daughers heart because of the Rheumatic Fever and that she had this for over a month and it was left untreated.
That was about 12 years ago, she's fine, but we were scared to death there for awhile.

So as soon as you see signs take her before she gets too sick :)
And ALWAYS trust our Motherly instincts!!! ;)

It is pretty contagious...I don't know if you can prevent it but you can lessen it by being on the lookout for any symptoms and treat them early.

There is nothing you can do to stop it if she's got it. Hopefully she won't get it.
