I've been reading about them, so I know they exist and are not the same thing as blackberries. Here's a photo at Wikipedia:

Anyway, I would like to try these and would be interested to know if they can be purchased in California and if not, why not.

Thanks!

Candeeloks: I don't know why some people are so nasty because it reflects poorly on them.

Peacyone: I guess it's possible what you say, but growing up I used to be able to order Black Raspberry ice cream at the local parlor, and even now The Häagen-Dazs has a Black Raspberry Chip flavor. So, it seems to me someone must be cultivating them and selling them somewhere.

keep looking you will find them. Ask your local produce manager if he/she can get them. Perhaps a local farmers market.

They grow wild mostly and are a ***** to pick, I usually try to get at least 10 pounds a year of them and since they are free it is the main fruit that I put in the freezer for winter. I have noticed though that a few farmstands had some last year -- up here in BC, Canada, but I don't know if anyone would bother to pick wild then sell, they would need to be priced higher than regular berries cause one hour of picking means a week of healing from all the scratches!

They are hard to find because like other berries, raspberry, blackberry etc. the do not store or ship well. Farmers markets are a good place to find tender fruits but don't count on it. Black raspberries are not going to be as common as the red. I prefer blackberries myself and pick all the wild ones I can find.

I have never seen fresh BLACK raspberries for sale anywhere. I know that they grow wild here in Washington State but I don't think they are a cultivated species. That could be why you can't find them.

Try a speciality store like Trader Joes.
