The story, as I understand it: Oscar the cat "works" in a nursing home. He's not much of a people cat--he'll go into a room, say hello, leave. If he senses someone is about to die--and there are probably chemical changes when someone is dying that change that person's scent--he stays with them. These are very ill people who probably are not going to recover.
The cat provides a great service. Think about it: if he cuddles up next to someone, the human staff know to call that person's family and warn them the end is near. Patients' family members can come say goodbye to their loved one and be there in that person's last moments. He may even provide comfort to the patient in the last hours of his life, although the article I've cited seems to think not.
And cats do not have extrasensory perception or a sixth sense. What they have is an excellent sense of smell and excellent hearing. They also have good night vision.

It has been scientifically proven that cats and certain other kinds of animals can sense and see things that us as humans can't. Kind of like ESP.
A particular cat of mine that I had for 12 years knew before I did when I was going to get sick from my illness that I have had all my life. Normally I could never find him when I wanted him but when I was about to start getting sick until I was over my "attack", you couldn't pry him away from me in any way, shape or form. He stuck to me like glue.

I do believe animals have a sixth sense, which we do not have. Dogs can smell cancer, predict when a person is going to have a seizure. Why not a cat can sense when death is near.? Perhaps, God gave them this, to warn us and help us prepare for the inevitable.

I have heard this all my life; dogs and cats, with their much keener senses, plus being in tune with people they live with, know when people are sick, even before the person does. It is a cat in tune with life.

Quite interesting.
The craziest part is that they call the neighbors of that person just because the cat sat beside him/her.
Ä° would find a way of getting rid of that. Suppose you live there and the cat sits beside you. CCRAZZY!
"Hello Mr.Brown, our cat is now sitting beside your grandma...."
Unbelievable
Meeoowww.

Kind of creepy, but interesting at the same time. Hope the residents of the home didn't see the story on TV!

I think it's really amazing. Very cool for those residents that live there with that cat.
