I am travelling with my significant other to Koh Samui in October. Should I book my hotel before I travel or wait until I get there, i.e. will I get better value for money and/or not get stuck paying for a bad hotel that I have to change? Thanks

I did a walk in when I was in Koh Samui. There are lots of hotels at every price range. No problems here. Also, Koh Samui gets small fast. There are many Islands in close proximity that aren't so smarmy and you will probably want to visit them. so don't lock yourself into a hotel until you are there. You will have many choices.

I normally don't book in advance via Internet, coz prices are better if calling or walking in.

But in case of Koh Samui, I normally book in advance because I am too lazy to hassle about getting a taxi from the airport. I normally stay at Sand Sea (Lamai, see link) because I find the service excellent. Except peak season, I always pay less than the rate stated on their web site.

I would book a place for the first night. At least you'll be able to get aclaimated without stressing about where to stay. I tried that walk in deal and it worked out OK but I was sent away after two day because they were booked for the weekend and I had to scramble to find another place.

I wouldn't bother. Better to have a walk around see what location you like. If you want to be near the party or farther away and quieter. Of course October is almost high season but there are plenty to choose from

I think before you decide to book or not check first what kind of guesthouse or hotel you may want to consider.
