My wrangler 04' has overdrive with the option to disable it when needed. lately, my jeep has been having a tough time increasing rpm/speed going up a hill even when my gas pedal is being pushed. It feels abnormal to be putting so much pressure on the pedal and to have no response in rpm/speed. I recently disabled the overdrive when approaching hills and the jeep rides great, picking up speed as i push the pedal. SO, is it ok to hit the 'O/D off' button whenever needed (approaching a hill), at any speed? I just don't want to misuse overdrive and cause another problem. Thanks much!!

that button is like any overdrive tranny on the market, on most vehicles it's on the shifter 1-2-3-D, and D being overdrive, just push your button off and it will be in 3rd gear and able to climb hills a lot better.

Nope thats perfectly normal. Thats what the buttons there for anyways. It locks up the torque converter giving you the extra power and it shifts down a gear furthering the power gain. However if you were able to get up this hill before in overdrive and now suddenly need to get up it you have to get out of overdrive then i would get your jeep checked. But other then that going out of overdrive on the freeway is not going to kill your jeep just dont leave it off and keep driving then youll start to give you jeep a tough time.

It is okay to manully downshift your tranny, but on all auto-trans cars it should happen automatically. YOu will hear this on the highway sometimes when a car is screaming by you. They aren't switching out of gear manually, just mashing the pedal down to the floor. Take a look under the hood, it could be something as simple as a cable that has fallen off.

yes.....it,s OK to turn it off......but.....has this been slowly happening?.....the loss of power?.....do you remember a time that you didn't need to do this?.....does your jeep sound unusually quiet?......if so....check to see if your catalytic converter is plugging up......this will also cause the symptom,s you describe......good luck!
