I have 2 of the most beautiful Pomeranians ever - they both have very loving, sweet dispositions about them. So recently my husband and I decided to adopt a third one. We wanted to give an unwanted pet a good, loving home. So we adpoted a another Pomeranian, Valentino. He is so sweet, loving and gets along with the other 2 just great. We couldn't ask for a better dog other than a few bathroom issues he has fit in fine but there is a problem, one I don't know how to break - I love birds, all kinds so my husband has put bird feeders along with bird houses in our back yard - our new addition is a bird killer. He has killed 5 of my baby birds in the last month and I don't know how to break him of it - we have never had this problem with our other 2 so it really has us stumped - we have a really nice fenced in back yard w/a pet door so the dogs may come and go as they please - getting rid of him is not an option - any suggestions would be appreciated?

I understand how you feel.

I have a rescue cockapoo who is great in every way, but he is a hunter.
He has killed birds, he brought a rat in and killed it on my bed, and I woke up from a nap to find a dead opossum next to the couch.

When I am outside with him, if he gets a bird, I tell him to drop it and he does , usually before the bird is injured and it can fly away.

I have TONS of birds in my back yard.

I have closed my pet door so I have to let my dogs out. That way, I can control the time they spend out there and watch what they are doing.

You could close it until you teach him not to chase birds, but really, it is their instinct. It's icky, but nature.

You can't break an animal out of its instinct to kill. Remove the dog's access to the birds.
