To see what the laws for your state are , check out http://www.hslda.org/laws/default.asp
I don't think that any state requires any type of GPA to be homeschooled.

As for programs, there are many different types of homeschool *programs*.
It would depend on what you are looking for ~
you have the online programs that you do most , if not all ,the work online, teachers at the *academy* you are with is who grades all your work and keep all your records.
www.aoacademy.com
http://www.bjupress.com/distance_learning/homeschool.html
www.abekaacademy.org
www.thegraceacademy.org
www.thejubileeacademy.org
www.k12.com
www.AlliedHighSchool.com

there are also www.connectionsacademy.com ~ this is only available in certain states.
( I think this is similar to (or maybe even part of ) the programs in some states where students do school at home using the public school curriculum( don't quote me on that part because it isn't available in my state so I am unsure about it right now) ~ some states ( I have heard that Ohio does this ) even get the internet, computers, etc set up for the students to use in their homes for free since it is part of the public school system )

There are also programs that you don't do online ~
there are computer programs like Switched on Schoolhouse ( which is from Alpha Omega www.aop.com ) and is also the same program they use with their online academy.

In addition you can get *boxed* curriculum ~ Alpha Omega ( www.aop.com ) , Abeka ( www.abeka.com ) , BJU ( http://www.bjupress.com/nav/category/Textbooks%20&%20Supplies) and more have complete curriculums for each grade
(*there are others as well but I don't have the links right off
you can do a search on yahoo or google to find more.)

I also like ones like http://www.accelerated-achievement.com/ and www.robinsoncurriculum.com

hope that helps some

I personally think JMHS is a good program for high school students but a beka is good too I've heard.

You do not need a certain GPA for to be homeschooled, a lot of parents don't give out "grades" they just make sure their child has an understanding of the subject and move on.

Unschooling is also an option, you don't have a set curriculum, you learn what you want and how you want. Projects and activities are a big part of unschooling compared to worksheets and textbooks. It depends on your preference and how involved your parents want to be.

With a correspondence program like JMHS I do everything myself and my parents just pay the bill every month. So if you are a self-taught learner and can motivate yourself every day this would be a good choice for you, but if you're not perhaps you should stick with a program that has more parental involvement.

Homeschooling is a great choice for those who are motivated and love to learn. There are so many choices depending on what method you choose and your grade level.

I personally used sing, spell, read & write in the beginning then switched to some abeka, rod & staff & Bob Jones. We also uses saxon math which we really liked. It is a good idea to get involved in a good, godly homeschool support group and share ideas and curriculum info. Also get involved with Homeschool Legal Defense. It was the best $100 we ever invested. It has been a while since we homeschooled so the fees may have gone up but the challenge with the school system that we had was quickly and firmly resolved by them.
You can do a google search to find most of these companies.

*** By the way any of you other homeschoolers reading this... I am looking for some gently used sing, spell, read & write material to start teaching my nephews (my girls are adults now and all their curriculum long gone) Please email me at sarahomanrealtor@yahoo.com

Check the state you live in for requirements on home schooling. Also check to see if there is a home schooling organization in your town. They can help you with getting everything set up. Also the organization might offer like science lab programs or other organized group activities.

Mardel is a good source for home schooling curriculum. This store has Christian and normal home schooling textbooks and programs.

This was my first year being home-schooled. I did the online programs. I went to public school form K-7th and some of 8th. In Feb. I switced to online. I personally hate it. I love being around my friends and socializing, and I missed that so bad. I went through www.auroralearning.com and I would not recommend it. It was difficult, very difficult! In public schools I was a Straight A student. In this program I came out with 2 Cs 4 Bs and a D. I got Fs every now and then. If you are like me at all, then I wouldn't do home school at all!

I know of many good home school programs. We don't use 'programs' in our family. We read and learn.

We also don't give grades in our family. I can see the benefit of keeping grades if you have more than one child and you want to create a little competition.

I was homeschooled for eight years and I think the Abeka program is pretty good. You could also do online homeschooling with your state program and they'll send you a free computer and all the eqipment! The only downside to that is that people tend to mess around in the classes a lot...and I didnt see a lot of learning getting done so i quit.

Abeka is great and very thorough. You do not have to have a certain grade point average to homeschool, anyone can do it. I wish you well!

No grade point average required to homeschool. And Penn Foster is a great school.
