I grew up in a family who greatly frowned upon people who used the system and allowed themselves to become welfare cases. I was brought up to work for what you have. Well ever since I was sixteen I have completely supported myself. Lately a lot of medical problems have come up for me though and I'm getting tired of just dealing with the pain, not going to the doctor, and risking having something serious because I simply cannot afford the doctor.

Is medicaid welfare? I need to see the doctor but I really don't want to be one of those people my boyfriend or father referred to when they said, "I have to go to work every day, millions of people on welfare are counting on me."

Heh. Info on Medicaid would be helpful. Thanks.

techincally Medicaid IS welfare... however, if you've been working since you were 16, then you've been paying into Medicaid ever since then. Why not take advantage of what you've been paying for?

I consider medicaid an insurance benefit since The program, authorized by Title XIX of the Social Security Act.

If you have ever worked in your life a premium has been deducted from every paycheck to cover the eventuality you may need it.

Would you hesitate to make a claim on any other insurance you have paid?

No you are not a welfare case if you use Medicaid. If you really need it use it as long as you are not 'using' the system (i'm sure you are not). Just do so with the intention that you will not be on it forever.

Check out whether your state has insurance plans for low income families. Illinois, for example, has discounted insurance plans for kids(kidscare) and families. I do not know the process but you can google for those.
