Diet and exercise. Take the dog for walks until it slims some then take it running, throw balls if it likes to fetch.

Cut back on the food. I reccommend using Science Diet, or there's plenty of other healthy dog foods without the fillers. Also, do not buy it if it has corn or wheat as an ingredient. Do not give him any type of people food, and use treats sparingly. If you're feeding an adult more than twice a day, stop. Feed him once in the morning, and once at night, probably a cup or so depending on the breed, size, and weight. Check on the side of the bag for that information. Also, excersize is key. Walk him atleast twice a day (weather permitting). I usually do that in the early morning and evening--it's cooler. You could also substitute walks for playing. Play with him in the backyard--toss balls, kongs, rope toys. Also, swimming is good if there's a nearby lake or pond (and if he likes swimming.)

It won't happen over night but switch to a quality low calories kibble, and use a measuring spoon/cup to give out measured amounts of food, don't just eyeball it. Reduce treats and exercise your dog. Exercise means aerobic exercise one that increase heartrate not just a walk around the block. Read the side of the bag of food and follow the guidelines by cutting the amount recommended in half...from there adjust the food daily based on activity level and time of year.

The weight loss to be healthy should not occur over a week or a few days..it's something where you should see it over months. You can judge your dog is at a good wieght when you can feel their ribs through their skin and a thin layer of fat, if you have to dig your dog is overweight, if the skin is taunt over the ribs..your dog is underweight.

I had a sheltie that was 24 pounds and she dropped to 18 pounds in about a month. We took her around the block lots, put her on the treadmill, and gave her half a cup of dog food twice a day. It worked for me!

Exercise him. And if you get tired of walking him a lot, go to the dog park.
